Air Cleaner still ok if duct missing?
« on: January 14, 2013, 09:18:50 am »
Hi all,

I've got a 77cb550f with a mostly complete airbox/cleaner.  only thing it's missing is the top duct, seal and cover(7,8,9 on the fiche).  Wondering how big of an issue this is as far as tuning my carbs go? should i look into another option, ride as is or desperately search for these pieces.

If you are using the stock exhaust, the mixtures will be a bit lean, and you may experience a bit more stumble on throttle advance.

What do your spark plugs and drivability say?

Well, it's not saying much of anything right now.  I just got the bike a couple weeks ago. the engine starts but, b/c a couple throttle slides were stuck in the carbs I'm unable to ride the bike.  so i'm in the process of rebuilding the carbs/waiting on parts.  Until i get the carbs back on I won't be able to do much of anything.  haven't pulled the plugs yet but it's on the list.

this is my first bike so trying to figure it all out as I go.

Do yourself a favor and make sure you pull the emulsion tubes while the carbs are off the bike. If you don't, you stand a fair to middling chance you'll be pulling the carbs again to do it later.

Hey scott,

thanks. so i'm understanding all this, not having the duct = too much air coming in and removing the emulsion tube helps make it run richer?

still learning how it all works.

No, no.....remove the emulsion tubes to clean them. Be sure to put them back in! They're an internal part of the carb(s) that often gets overlooked. They get gummed up with varnish, dirt, etc. and make the bike run like crap and hard to tune.

The duct you're talking about goes on the airbox. The emulsion tubes are a brass part inside the carbs.

i fully cleaned the carbs last week. nice and pretty now on the inside, at least as much as a 35yr old part can be. i know what everything is, just was taking from your original post where u said the bike would be running leaner w/ out the duct so thought you were saying to remove the tube completely to compensate.

Sure thing- I actually found another one and picked it up too. It has a few more parts than I really need, but maybe someone around here would be looking for it sometime.

ditto. will probably try to offer up the duplicate parts on here or ebay to help offset cost.
