Muffler for a 77CB550F Can’t Really be this Hard to Find
« on: March 17, 2019, 07:54:42 PM »
All

I need some advice on where to find a muffler for my 77 550F. I’ve search the net, eBay, 4into1, and various other sites. I can’t find one that will slip over a 2.12” (2 1/8) 4into1 pipe. I’m assuming the muffler is supposed to fit over pipe and not other way around. All mufflers I’ve seen have 1.75” opening with adapters to go smaller.

I’ve gotten confirmation from another 550F owner that 2.12” is the right size. Am I missing something or are they really this hard to track down?

Thanks Ace

I after over a year’s search, ended up with a rusted but somewhat decent muffler and got it repaired. Not show bike but functional and stock.

4into1.com sell a Mac muffler that goes on stock headers. Did buy one, worked fine but I wanted stock. It’s below 200$ if I recall correct.

Thanks guys, at least I know it’s not just me. I’ll keep an eye out. Will most likely do some sort of reducer until I can find a proper one.  Won’t look smooth or original but should allow me to tune carbs and get the bike running at least.

The 75, 76 750F uses a large header too, I slipped a 2 1/2" stainless truck exhaust tip 18" long over it. It was 3 1/2" OD from there back so it will hold a glass pack insert for a corvette or cobra side pipe. You would need to slot the end to tighten, use the graphite gasket or other shim material and a T bolt clamp to attach it. I got the pipe from auto barn, the insert was made by patriot, bought from jegs. I welded hangers to the stainless, just an idea to start with. They sounded awesome.

Delkevic perhaps??
The Delkevic systems use a separate 4/1 adaptor and then I think the mufflers are 64mm, so probably a bit large. Maybe an oversize gasket over the stock 4/1 headers.

Delkevic sells a whole system for $325, which is not a bad option. The header doesn't look as cool as the standard F model with all 4 tubes sweeping outside the oil filter, but on the plus side it is polished stainless steel and won't ever rust.

I just put one on my 750F.

Stock can be very hard to find.  I ended up putting on a 4-1 Mac header on mine.  It worked very well.  I think better than the original, but I wasn't concerned about keeping it stock....just how it ran.

Thanks All

At this point I’m not concerned with OEM as much as finding a muffler that will fit a 2.12” OD of the header. No luck to this point.  I’m now looking for a reducer to allow for a smaller ID muffler.  Unfortunately all the reducers I’ve run into assume muffler too big for header.

I haven’t been to auto store yet so there is still hope I’ll run across something.

Just for the record, the mufflers on the original systems were the weak spot -- thin metal that rusted out quickly, which is why they are hard (but not impossible) to find.

Can550, if I could weld like that, I’d just make one from scratch.
I did find a couple on 4into1. They were shortys. So that is an option. I’m  also having some luck with reducers now.  I went net wide instead of just eBay.  I’m thinking I’ll go with a reducer and the 26” muffler from 2fastmoto. Time will tell.

I appreciate the input

I used a piece of standard automotive exhaust pipe as a reducer to attach a Cone Engineering shorty that was the same diameter as the 550F collector. I had it welded to the collector and used a clamp on the Cone.

Nice one sixth. That turned out really sharp. I assume that’s an exhaust or engine paint.

It is Ceramic coated but it didn't do well. I need to have it redone.
