Awesome, Jeff. Those side cover emblems look great. Did you paint them yourself & if so, what process/paint did you use?

Don - That rear fender and tail light look familiar? As mentioned before, the ghost / ice checks have recieved numerous compliments and match the rest of the bike remarkably well.

Aint No Easy Way - Those are the stock side badges with the stock gold paint scrubbed off, hit with a coat of matte black and then some fine sandpaper to get the coat of matte black off the top of the letters / numbers.

Here is a pic of the other side of the bike... before I cleaned-up the motor and added the case savers (first pic is after that work). Bike runs strong (thanks to the help of an Anders carb rebuild). Prior to this season last registered in 1997.

Those are Maier mfg covers, it came with the left one and I found a right one for cheap.

Desert, how do the Maier covers attach? Looks like bolt/screw heads facing out, which I would prefer to losing one or two going down the highway. Were they difficult to attach and do they come off easily? Thanks.

I know its been a while, but I've been slammed at the shop lately, so here ya go.

This is what I adapted to the stock mounts. Its a heavy duty drywall anchor.

I cut the heads off and leave the "spider legs" with the threaded bung and use the legs to wrap arount the stock mounts for the factory side covers.....you may need to get creative!

You can cut the bolts shorter, but you don't have to they clear on both sides and you didn't do any mods to the factory mounts so if you find a killer deal on a set of original covers they will still work. The cover holds the legs in place and the rubber grommets prevents any rattles while a Phillips screw driver is all you need to get them off........easy peezy.

Crazily enough, I made a condensed album detailing most of the steps of my build and posted it to the social media/sharing site www.reddit.com where it gained traction and ended up hitting the front page! The pic above got over 400,000 views! I was blown away! Below is the link to my submission, for those curious.

heck Yeah!
I like them for several reasons.
#1. I had one back in the day when I was young just like the one I have now, so theirs that.
#2 Well I bought this K8 for $1200.00 with 4000 miles on it from the original owner.
That's not something that was very hard to do.
That part is tough not to like!
heres my baby I just gassed her up today!

can I join up with the k7 k8 team?

my wife like to ride on this bike so I am thinking I will leave it stock for that reason.

It used to be real CHERRY when I bought it in June 2006
I let it get bad, I'm ashamed about that,(unavoidable), it was outside under a cover for 2 years, & 1 year in storage shed.

I did look for it, for a long time, but I was riding other bikes while I was looking.

Just put together my 1977. The tank is awaiting rubber parts to be mounted. The paint by C&D Auto Body in Bend OR is outstanding. It is a black mirror. Sharp eyed observers will notice that the seat is a '78.

The 1978-79 models were the last of the SOHC models and had the most improvements.
Almost 21 improvements.

More cooling fins.
Better clutch.
More fins on the oil filter housing.
Different breathing of the cylinder head and oil drain downs.
Better cam chain.
Longer swing arm .
Bigger gas tank.
I won't list them all .

The carbs were not as good as the first ones.
The 69-70 carbs were the best ones.
