Is it supposed to look like this in here?

So I got my impact driver today (best purchase I've made in a LONG time, maybe ever) and finally got the left crankcase off my CB550 so I could replace the shifter seal. I'm wondering how well I should clean the inside of here while I've got the cover off.
Is all that buildup just dirt/crap, or is some of that grease of some sort that's supposed to be there?
The second photo is of the inside of the cover.

So I can clean it out as well as possible and not worry about removing any goop that's supposed to be there?

Yep, clean as best as possible, and Greggo's observation about your sprocket is right on-you probably need a chain and sprocket set...Larry

Ah, crap. You're probably right. Do you think all of them in the diagram for the oil pump need to be replaced or is there one that's more suspect than the others?

What I did with my 650 was I pulled it off, stripped the pump down then took it and the old o-rings into my local bearing supply store.  They measured the o-rings up and gave me the correct ones.  I think it cost me about $2.50 for all the o-rings in the pump.  There is the 3 that seal the oil pump to the crankcase, there is one that seals the pressure relief valve cap and there is one that seals the back of the pump.  The one on the back of the pump was the one that was leaking on my bike and I see it isn't listed in that parts diagram.

When you say "on the back of the pump" do you mean behind the plate with the 3 screws on it that's not labeled in that diagram? Or is it behind that? I've ordered one that's 46x2 based on some info in several other posts regarding the 550 oil pump leak.

Looking at the Clymer manual, I think that is the one you mean. They have a photo of the entire pump disassembled and labeled.  It's #5 in the diagram, right?

After about a 25-30 mile ride I park it on the side stand and after awhile there's a pool of oil at the bottom of the kick stand, oil is running down the stand (no external signs of oil leak).  Is this a sign of oil pump leak?  Inside the cover it kinda looks like the photo above. Can't really see a stream from either shaft seals. Bike is '78 550.

Seems like it could be. I'm going to replace the o-rings on mine while I'm in there as well as the shift seal since they both seem to be a common problem and a cheap fix. Also going to replace the oil pan gasket since I've got the oil drained and I doubt the PO ever did, judging by the look of everything else.

Yep, number 5 was the one I was talking about as the back of the pump ;), you also want to replace 7, 13 and 10 (which there should be 2).  I can't remember the exact size of the o-ring mine took.  It has been quite a while since I replaced mine, but I know the information is available on this forum somewhere.  ;D

Looks a bit 'clean' to me, if chain had been oiled more regularly there would be a LOT more grunge in there

I used JT sprockets just recently and an RK x-ring chain.  Haven't taken it for a spin but I doubt I would notice anything but it being quieter with new stuff.  I did an O-ring chain for easier maintenance but you'll get into a piss fight with non o-ring vs o-ring chains, either work :P

You can't use an o-ring chain on a 500 or a 550, they foul on the case ;)

My CB550 did the same thing last year.  I changed out the O rings and no more leak.  But I did not change the shaft seal.  I should have as I think it may be leaking now (going to check tomorrow to see if it is or not).  Oh well.  I have them I was just was too lazy to put it on--so change all of them while you are in there is my suggestion.

That's what got me started on this task to begin with, by the way. Noticed it in early fall and it seemed to be getting worse.
