1971 CB750 -- What's Not Stock?
« on: January 17, 2013, 06:10:30 PM »
I have the opportunity to buy a decent condition 1971 CB750 for what I think is a reasonable price ($800 - $900).  I have riddent the bike and it runs pretty well (it needs a tune up, but it accelerated well and ran through all the gears) and all the electrical components work (lights, starter, turn signals, etc...).  It was never "modded" (i.e. cafe racer / chopper), but it's not stock.  I know the muffler and side panels are not stock, but I'm not sure what else is not stock.  I think the gas tank is stock, but when it was painted the badeges were removed and filled prior to painting.  If I buy the bike I would like to return it to stock so I'm trying to figure out what parts I would need to do that.  If you can take a look at the pictures and let me know what's been replaced I would appreciate it.

Also, does anybody know if the anyplace on the bike tells you what the original color was (i.e. somewhere on the frame maybe).  I have no idea what the original color was.   Finally, speaking of paints, is there a good source for the original 1971 Honda colors.  Thanks for your help.

(Note:  Having trouble posting pictures.  Will post more photos in follow up messages)

Nice looking bike. The tank has been filled in. The grab bar is for a later 750. You have a pic of the gauges? Overall the bike looks good. The blue paint  looks to have a candy effect. Nice. You keeping the pods?

Oops. You posted a pic of the gauges. Really nice. Almost complete ago let minus a few things.

You won't find any ID on the frame that will indicate its original color but here is a link to some pics and info on that model.

I don't think you should buy it.....because I want it!

The starter button(?) on by the gauges is not stock. Title?

That appears to be a fantastic deal, go get it.

It's a full and clear (i.e. not salvage) title.  I'm glad you think it's a good deal.  I've always wanted one and am happy to get an earlier one at that price.

Also, the fenders were chrome from the factory. As far as I know, you cannot determine the original paint color from the VIN #.  Where are you located, I'm guessing Midwest, where all the SOHC deals are.

You have the “Maier” brand aftermarket side covers. They are ok, but not original for a 1971 750 K1.

This photo shows genuine 1971 K1 Honda side covers with the correct "750 Four" script emblems and the correct red jewels.

Hi and welcome to the forum.
Nice 71.  You will enjoy putting her back to stock.  Actually not all that much.
Here are a few things I noted.   I am sure there are more that I missed.

Yes, exhaust and sidecovers not stock as you have noted.
The tank appears to be an early model as the 71 and has been skinned.
Both front and rear fenders not stock.
Crash bars not original
air box missing.  Using air pods instead.
Rear grab bar for 72-76 model.  Turn signal mounts missing.  Grab handle on right missing.
Ignition switch relocated .  Cannot tell if original mounting bracket is still there.  Bad eyes.
Horn button missing

In short not all that much to change.

As for colors, your best bet is to remove the tank and inspect the bottom or look inside the headlight housing for the original paint color.
70/71 colors were candy ruby red, candy gold, valley green metallic and candy garnet brown.

Good luck with your new ride.

Will someone please sell me a spare set of the candy gold side covers!

That tank paint is awesome! I love that kind of stuff, haha. It's in pretty nice shape, I don't know enough about the earlier models to know what's not year correct but I know that you're getting a deal of a price. Snap it up quick.

Your ignition isn't stock. I'd be interested to see the wiring from it and how bad the Wires are cut.

Here’s two links for paint:

http://www.ct70paint.com/

The 750 K1 was also produced in a attractive candy blue, but it wasn’t sold in the USA market.

Almost forgot, Welcome to the forums. :)

Stev-o, You are correct about the polynesian blue K1 color. ;)

A poor example, but you get the idea.

Honestly, it would cost a lot to return that bike to stock. If you like it the way it sits, then then buy it.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

The best thing I see about that K1 is its an early model 104 serial # you can see on the cylinder jug fins that its original (they have a point in the middle).  That means it has a better K0 motor "old factory"  very nice find!!!! ;D

Look at where the side covers attach and see if there are oval grommets with rubber in them.  If the grommets are gone then STOCK side covers won't attach like original!!! Is that speedo in Kilometers? Doesn't look original for USA!

What state is this bike located in?  If you can find a 750 that runs for under $1000 its ok to buy it.  In today's market you will not lose any money on it.  Buy it.  Should you decide its not what you want you can sell it and get your money back.  If you wait, it will be gone.
