Greetings from Texas
« on: December 18, 2012, 11:12:11 AM »
CB750 newb from Houston, TX.  Been lurking for a while, but just signed up.  A guy I do some business with gave me this 1974 CB750 basket case a few weeks back.  Just transferred the title yesterday, so I guess it's official.  I have been looking for a project bike and for the price of $0.00 I couldn't say "no".  Needs new or rebuilt everything, but it's not outside the realm of possibilities.

Been riding since I was a kid.  I don't know if there's a "no photos of V-twins" rule here, but here's my current daily rider.  I don't have a car, except when I borrow my wife's. Pretty much built the bike myself.  Rode it to Sturgis and back last year.

I'm not a dyed in the wool, diehard Harley guy by any means.  I appreciate just about any classic motorcycle.  Looking forward to getting my hands dirty on the CB750 and hanging out on the forum.  I've already found a ton of great info here.

Welcome!
WoW! Lots of rust in there. Good luck with it.
Start a build thread, It's good to have to go back and see were you've been.
With LOTS of pictures!

Your daily rider looks good.
Doesn't look like you have any problem holding a metric wrench in your hand.

Thanks for the welcomes.  I actually live right next door to Pearland, kmb69.

Steve, the rust is not much of a concern.  I do some contract work for my uncle's company, which specializes in helping people get rid of rust, old paint and just about every other nasty substance you don't want stuck to metal anymore.  I was also a paint/body repairman in a former life and have turned a lof metric wrenches.

The seat is in pretty good shape for the most part.  It only has two small holes in the vinyl.  The trim and chrome strap hold downs need to be replaced.  I imagine it's worth a worth a few dollars to someone.

The major issue is going to be the engine.  The bike and engine have been sitting outside in a machine shop yard for three years.  The head and cylinders where removed who knows when and water was inside the cases.  The engine will probably one of the last pieces of the puzzle.

Other than a little tinkering here and there it's going to be about six months before I can really jump into it.  I've got several projects going I need to finish up first.  At this point though the only parts I can see keeping are the frame, the swingarm, the rims, the hubs, the lower fork legs and maybe the tank.  I had to pry the cap off because of no key for the lock and dumped about a 1/2 cup of rust flakes out of the tank.  It's pretty bad.

Until then I'll do my homework and start trying to gather a few parts.

Welcome from Lake Travis.  If that motor has been sitting outside, it my be best to find another.  I occasionally see them for $200-300.

That's pretty much what I'm thinking.  One of the cylinder sleeves has dropped and the head looks warped.  I'll probably go ahead and tear it down for grins, just to become familiar with the inner workings.

Will any K series engine fit a '74 frame?

Yes, all K model motors '70-'78 are basically the same and will fit. The older motors are most desirable and have slightly more hp.
Let me know when you are ready, I can help find you a motor.

Actually, for ease-of-transplant you'll want to stick to '69-76. The later motors have longer output shafts.

Got my Texas title in the mail today. I guess it's official. Looking forward to some warmer weather so I can begin this little project of mine.
