Here's the story:
I was with a friend at a local motorcycle shop. My friend had an old Kawasaki he wanted to show me that he was storing there. He took me into a big garage that was jammed full of bikes. Most of them were all 80's sportbikes. But... back in the corner I saw an old CB. I crawled my way back there and discovered it was a CB500T.
When we got out of the garage I talked to the shop owner about it. He said a guy came and dropped it off a few years ago wanting to get it running again. He looked at it for him and discovered the motor was seized so he called the owner and told him him there was nothing he could do and it's been sitting ever since. He told me if he could get ahold of the owner and if it was ok with him, he would just give it to me because it was just taking up space. I gave him my number and was hopeful for a callback. Never happened.
The bike is currently sitting outside in the weather. It is in pretty good cosmetic shape. Not a lot of rust. For now. The contact info the shop owner has is no longer valid I believe because he has not been able to get ahold of the bike owner. (I've been bugging him about it for several months.)
So... here's where I need help. I want to do a VIN lookup and see who the last registered owner of this bike was. (I live in TX) The problem is it has a 13 digit VIN and the DMV says they must have 17 digit VIN.
There's got to be some way to find this guy. Help me rescue this bike before it's too late!
And of course I have pics for you all....
