Soda blasting questions
« on: January 17, 2013, 09:04:58 PM »
I have an air compressor and a soda blasting kit that I use at home for cleaning up small components, carb parts etc. Whilst it is very effective, it is a little messy and I don't think I have the capacity to do large components such as the crankcase, block cylinder head etc.

So I am going to take these parts to a professional outfit and have them blasted (the PO had sprayed them all black).  My question is, do I need to take out the rocker arms to have the cylinder head cover blasted? I cannot get the plastic wedges out that would free up the rocker arms and allow them to be removed. So if I can leave them in without the risk of them getting damaged during the soda blasting it would save me headache of trying to remove the wedges.

You opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks

What kinda bike?

The 750 you probably won't be able to get that cover off with out some serious finagling. I somehow did and I honestly can't tell you how it happened. I'm not sure what plastic wedges you are referring to tho. If it is the smaller bikes you should be able to just remove the valve cover and send it to your blaster
The dirty girl-1976 cb750k, Ebay 836, Tracy bodykit
Round top carbs w/ 38 pilots, middle needle position, airscrew 7/8ths out, 122 main jet
Stock airbox w/ drop in K&N, Hooker 4-1

Don't trust me alone with a claw hammer and some pliers

Sorry, it's a 78 cb 550k. The motor is already apart. There are four studs that stop the rocker arms from sliding out. If I can get away with leaving them in place then that would be ideal.

Also, is it safe to blast clean valve and pistons to remove carbon deposits?

those wedges are like the old style bicycle cotter pins, just knock them out then the shafts pull free.
