reminiscing is for all ages I guess
« on: January 19, 2013, 12:27:46 PM »
Today is beautiful here in berryton Kansas. I'm out working on my chopper the son and his buddies are working on a cb350f they are outside the shop talking about high school  and the old days. what old days you guys are only 23yrs old. So I guess reminiscing is just not for the older fellows its kinda funny hearing some of the stories those boys are telling each other. You really find out how onery kids can be when parents aren't around. The plus side is they all turned out to be very good young adults so far. Then I realize I've known my sons friends since he started kindergarten, now I feel even older. One of them offered me a beer but it just doesn't seem right. Well breaks over my rave for the day.
I've done a lot of things in my life that I'm not proud of...and the things I AM proud of, "are disgusting"

Get older Jamie and you realize that everyone is a teenager compared to you and you buddies and it astonishes me every time to hear their reminisces particularly when their memories don't have the edge yours do. I suppose different times.

There was less to hide from in my day, less laws, the fun police hadn't raised their ugly heads. When me and my mates tell stories over a few beers the kids {early 20's} are just blown away at what we did, mostly because most of it is illegal these days... ;D ;D ;)

When my boys were young I was VERY careful about what I reminisced about when they were listening, I didn't want them to get the idea that if dad did it then it must be OK. I grew up in the southwest suburbs of Chicago, not a rough neighborhood but it was rowdy and I was an active participant in the rowdiness.  8)

The first time my kids (two daughters) began to consider that I might be a person was when a couple of ex airforce buddies showed up and we sat down and told war stories about how we collectively got through the stark terror and unremitting boredom of RCAF  life of the time all I could hear from the girls was "he didn't"  "Dad" I think that was also about the time my wife decided to watch my playmates more carefully.
As far as boy friends went they stopped reminiscing after a few of the war stories got out. Ah well,so it goes.

I was telling my wife about it and she laughed.she said the snuck around the other side of the house and took a cigarette break and was talking about their beards they where growing. Then she went into a bummed out mode. (She realized she is also getting old). Even though they are grown they still can't smoke in front of us.

I hear what you're saying. If there's a good thing about it is if your children had good friends then it's just as enjoyable watching them grow into responsible adults as well. Our house was where all our boys friends would hang out at because my wife and I were the most fun parents, fortunately their friends were clean fun loving kids so they were a lot of fun. We must've had a positive impact on them because all their friends wanted to be our FB friends so we all still stay in touch.

I think you should have taken the beer, they were reaching out and hoping for acceptance, but you did not take up the offer. Look at it this way, if they canbe comfortable there, then they are not out at some bar hangingol out with the druggies and other misfits..

That s jmo, but you choose what you wkould rather want them to do..

That's great Bailgang as far as my daughters boy frinds went at least one I had to explain to him that unwanted children because of not taken precautions were verboten ( think that the words were I don't give a #$%* wether the pope, catholic church, and god said condoms were bad if there is a pregancy you'd better hope that they get to you first, because the've got mercy, I don't) and it's not that they were bad kids, they weren't, it's just the old man ranting again was the attitude and occasionally young gentlemen have to be reminded of the realities of life.

Oh trust me, just because we were the most "fun" parents didn't mean any of their friends escaped any realities of life rants, I was just very good at giving reality checks that they could clearly understand. :)

I thought I had lived a bit rough as a young person until my son, who is in his early 30s started talking recently about his dozen years in New York City from age 17, and 3 years in Haiti. Thinking about it a bit, we both take some pride from having taken chances and making it through OK. I am glad I didnt know what he was up to while he was up to it though!

It is all relative, I remember finding out one of my co-workers was 25, I thought dang, I didn't think he was that old! Now I think back to meeting James in Topeka at  MC classics and riding the SOHC tour few miles together remembering he's one of the young guys.
