the roof system, rafters, are 2x10's that allows for about 6- 8 inches with out trimming. depending who you listen to its about r-22-24, but there is a whole different set of standards for the foam rotating around a blower door test and air infiltration.

even with out the brick and drywall it is unbelievably quite, i had a heater running in the basement and it was uncomfortably warm while working.

Polyurethane expanding foam is very flammable. Be careful, Raef

 Good to hear. :)
I guess there are fire rated, recyclable foams I did not know about. I was looking into Tiger foam...I might have to get those sometime....Good luck with your house.

Spray foam is pretty much state of the art right now AFAIK. I was in house construction for 25/30 years until about 5 years ago so I've seen most of the insulation trends. All of the foam work I've seen has been sprayed to the inside of the framing or just beyond and then trimmed off with either a hot wire or hand saws. Filling the space gives you a better R value.

From the pics posted I'd say the insulators came up short. Why didn't they fill the space between the rafters in order to give you the highest possible R value? I'd have to guess that they're saving themselves time and materials while costing you money.

I just looked at the pics again. It looks like they filled the space between the wall studs but not the rafters. Is that right? Maybe they were running out of foam? Maybe they don't understand heat loss? And where it tends to occur?

they did it just as it was bid, I had a another bid that was to completely fill all voids flush but that guy was about 5K more and he would never put it in writing. the other also said that he was so good there would be no trimmings, after seeing it first hand I know it would not be possible to do both.

the guy that did the job says it has what it needs and will pass all codes, he also guaranteed it to pass the door blower test and I should reduce the size of the mechanical components of the hvac system by about 30%
