Topic: Knee Dent Questions - Pads or Paint

So i have some nice symmetrical knee dents in my tank. The whole thing is bondoed smooth and primered. Now im trying to decide on paint. Has anyone on here stenciled in paint to the dents? howd that go?

On the flip has anybody added those knee dent pads/protectors?
Did you make them or buy them? ellaborate please!

the colors im thinking for the tank were a charcoal with the dents in cream but I keep getting told that its going to be extremely difficult and ill end up getting a paint line and paint a hand made dent is going to be a HUGE pain in the ass.

So opinions please, thanks!

I just pounded in some knee dents myself so am faced with the same dilemma.  I think I am going red for the overall tank and then satin or flat black paint in the dent area.  Not hard to paint at all, just need to go with the natural lines of the tank.  Hopefully that is what they did when they hammered it also.  I looked at rubber pads before I started hammering and couldn't find a reasonably priced set that fit with the curves of the SOHC 750 tank.

As far as the painting goes if your wanting a nice edge use pin striping tape to make your edge then tape it of with some wider tape use painters tape this is what my son uses on tanks and panels on bikes and cars he uses different sizes of tape. As far as the rubber pads you can go to lowes or your local hardware store and get some rubber material like a floor mat or tile square it's pretty thin so it can be molded to fit with a heat gun. lowes has some diamond plate rubber tile squares that look cool on a bike. Before you paint the tank cut out your pattern and place it on the tank and use a heat gun to mold it in the dent. Sometimes you can find material that is pliable enough that you do not have to use a heat gun. The color scheme that you mentioned sounds like a good combo. I like the cream colors on a two tone paint, makes it look vintage in my opinion.

Any real body man can lay down that paint and not have paint lines. If it clear coated its easier but single stage can be done. You just have to have a guy good with the tape. My friend is such a guy, we did it on my corvair with rattle can for fun

^^^+1 to that, any painter that knows what their doing can paint that for you without trouble. You get what you pay for when it comes to paint.
