'78 750k OEM Brake Pad - Too big?
« on: January 21, 2013, 09:48:35 AM »
I'm installing new brake pads on my 78 750k and the moving pad appears to be too large to fit in the bore of the caliper.

The piston is in but the pad itself is too wide by about 0.5 (measured by calipers). There is absolutely no way it will fit!

Do I return it?

I could attempt to take off some of the metal (on the bottom of the pad) with a dremel but I will not be able to ensure it will be properly round and this seems a very crude way of fixing the problem.

Any suggestions??

The pad is part number 45106-390-305 and yes the number on the packet matches the number on the fiche.

.5 what? Millimeters?
Is the pad base painted?
Removing some of this paint is often needed for smooth operation..  just had to do this on mine.
Emory cloth works well

Sorry - yes 0.5mm.

There is no paint on the metal  - OEM is bare - emery cloth however is a good idea. Easier to control than a dremel I think!

In case anybody else runs into the same issue I chocked it in a a vice and worked it over with a hand file before polishing with fine emery cloth. Took about 20 mins.

I wasn't expecting fitment issues after going OEM (at OEM prices!) but at least I know I have a custom fit pad :)

That is odd.  I just got new ones on my k4 last week and didn't have an issue with them fitting.

It is good practise to hit the pad with emery cloth everytime you install new one. I had to grind pads for car application before.
