trueing spoke wheels
« on: January 25, 2013, 05:09:45 PM »
I laced up my new 18" rear rim; I finally got it right after 3 tries.  I'm trueing it up now and I've got both the runouts within spec except for the spot where the wheel is welded.  This is a genuine Honda rim.  Should I ignore the the welded spot when trueing it?

regards

That's the spot that always gives me grief.   How close is it ?    If it's within a millimeter or so, you're plenty good.

Sometimes they get a bit overzealous when finishing the weld seam.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

Ignore it. It is only an inch or so of the rim, so if the rest of the rim is true, then you're good.

+1

You're not supposed to even try truing the weld spot. It's a bump in the wheel so truing that small spot will guarantee that a portion of the wheel, maybe 6" or so,  close by the weld spot isn't going to be true. Your choice. A small spot that's out or six inches or so that's out.
