 Them are big slugs...
I think that blown single here in town is around 107 mm.. 4.25 bore.

That's about the same size as our 1925 Allis-Chalmers 15-25 Model L......before it got bored another 1/4-inch for a rebuild.  Quite a bit larger than my Triumph Cub.  Pretty exotic piston and ring in the Beemer ;) ;)

It's a wonder the thing stays straight in the bore. Cool looking indeed.

the bm piston has such a low crown hight so that the cylinders can be shortened , the classic racers love them as it gives quite a lot more ground clearance .
tg i am still looking for that supermono for you .

yep mec, thats even more extreme! rod looks too long and slender for F1... with such small skirt looks like a drag motor.

thanks simon, but unless something comes up at the last moment, february 2nd i i will go with a sort of "kit bike" solution...

the piston posted above seems to be made from steel. running in a steel cylinder liner you can run very tight piston clearances, thats why they work although beeing that short.
from what i have read, the piston is in an experimental stage, maybe for a ducati?

here is another one. made from steel, claims to be lighter than our "old fashioned" slipper ones:

Honda Monkey
Takeuchi TB 070
Massey Ferguson

Wish I'd kept pictures of the 105 bore piston from Dave Morris's Chrysalis BMW TT racer - they were awesome things. By happy coincidence I'm waiting for the postman today to deliver my new 100 bore pistons for the supermono project (you have to buy them in pairs!). They should be interesting...!

mike, any idea whats the story behind this CP thing ? did carillo buy a complete piston setup and became a manufacturer or is it just re-branded high end slugs?

a few years ago carillo has been bought by the austrian company pankl.com . they are well known as a supplier in F1 and other high tech regios.
no wonder carillo/pankl sells it all.

Exactly right TG except I'm not going to reproduce the original doppia billietta of the original 'mono, just lighten the crank enough that it can be balanced for a single pot. The crank arrived from the USA with the pistons yesterday. Amazingly beautiful work by Ben Fox of Fox Performance. Some talented engine tuners in the USA that's for sure ;-)

I do have some 102 bore supermono pistons on my "shelf of wonders" somewhere, must dig them out and photograph them  ;D

pankl are the finest piston / rod etc manufacturer in the world  but they are certainly not cheap , have just bought some aprilia gudgeon pins from them at  £550 each which hurt a bit .

Pankl makes F1 stuff....JE, Wiseco and CP do not. Mahle do if memory serves correct. Pins cost a lot....talk to Kelly Roberts.

from solid gold much easier to fabricate than ultraleightweight highstress pins.

i remember the pictures i have seen, 20 years ago, conrods made of carbon fibre, transmission axles from carbon fibre tubes (between the front and rear differentials for the early audi quattro), all made by Pankl! they havnt been a success however.
