Flux wire welder..
« on: January 21, 2013, 03:00:27 PM »
OK, this is Harbor Freight stuff. Some good, most junk.

I really don't need one BUT if I do it's nice to have.

To buy or not to buy? That is the question.

looks like a good deal, if it does in fact have variable feed speed.  good enough to stick two bits of steel together!

I bought this about a month ago. Quick answer: its worth it. I bought it because the cat converter on my car cracked, so it was either $200+ for a new one, or this.

Now, obviously the basics:
1. you get what you pay for
2. welding is a skill.

This is a great starter, or to have in the shop for random little tasks. It runs on a 15amp circuit which is a huge plus. Being on 110 it can't weld anything too thick. no solid stock. But  to make brackets, repair stuff, and stuff where you can smooth out your ugly beads with the grinder, perfect.

I was psyched after i fixed my cat, and have used it on a few other things. Going back, i probably would have gone for the slightly more expensive one to have more control of the power (its just a low/high switch as opposed to a variable knob) and the better one can use stainless wire.  Also I read to not bother with the wire it comes with and buy better stuff, loses and home depot stock lincoln wire.

Also the mask it comes with is a joke, but fine for your first job or two.

I've had mine for 5 or more years and like it my only problem with it is the feeder wheel will wear out and not feed the wire through. I replaced it once because it was under warranty. Now I have a small c clamp that helps feed the wire other than that I have welded tons of stuff with it. Lots of exauhst pipes. Panels on cars intact I just used it Sunday for my rear fender on my chopper I have gotten my $100.00 worth. it's cheap enough to practice on and then in the future but a better a d bigger one
I've done a lot of things in my life that I'm not proud of...and the things I AM proud of, "are disgusting"

Exactly!  Save yourself the frustration and get a real welder, just 110V MIG is plenty.

Yeah, I did the Harbor Freight Welder, good for starting and learning the basics. Fixed lots of things around the shop ie cars ,trucks ,bikes, welded the snowbike together with it but , Now I want one with gas, and a stick set up, wanting to take night classes to learn the skill and lose any bad habits.

Side note: about 10 years ago I bought a hot wrench,( cutting torch). How handy was that! Had to sell it, cut every dam thing in the yard.
A few Honda 500's, a few Honda 550's, a few Honda 650's, '72 cb 450, a couple 500/550/650 hybrids, and 2001 750.
550 Snowbike -Somebody had to do it.

Just wanted to see what others thought.

Sounds like a 110 Volt Mig is the way to go. I don't need one but then again I don't have one.  ;D ;D ;D
