Anyone upgrade their 750's starter motor?
« on: February 20, 2013, 01:06:20 PM »
Since my overbore/higher compression, my starter has a little more trouble than it used to. It starts, but those times when the bike has been sitting for a while, and needs a few tries, the starter gets tired fast.  I have a new sealed battery too.

Im wondering.. has anyone found an upgrade? something that is more efficient? Im sure these are getting designed more efficient these days.. but anything that will fit in the 750?

Im thinking if at least upgrading the + and - wires on the starter motor to something thicker.

Or should I be looking for a battery with more CCA?

Whats your sealed battery's CCA rating? Which battery are you using?

I have an new AGM battery on my fresh 900 with HD springs and it turns just fine. My engine has higher compression than stock but I wouldn't consider it high compression. What is your comp ratio?

pretty sure its a scorpion battery. And I don't know my exact compression..

It turns the motor ok, just needs full charge to be able to do it. Im 152lbs and the kick can hold my body weight.

I just get jealous hearing a modern bike's starter spinning so fast and effortlessly..

Haha. I haven't tried my kicker yet. Guess I'll have to go out to the cold garage and try. I've got you by 5lb or so.

I will say that my entire electrical system is NOS and what I couldn't find I replaced the bullet connectors. Have you checked the condition of your charging system? They are the biggest pain in the ass and probably the weakest link in the long run. I just couldn't get that mythical 14.5V previously and I had to keep the R's up to get 13.2V out of it. Around town sucked! Now it's kicking some serious voltage ass for the first time in forever. I was concerned about my starter too but have been pleasantly surprised. I now also have a new igntion switch (lots of juice flows through) it) and I replaced my Dyna III ignition with a Dyna 2000 so that could be less draw but I can't say for sure. Anyway, if you haven't checked the health of your charging system do that and compare it to the charging chart Volts @ xxxx rpms. I always believe in eliminating one thing at a time before I place blame on an unknown.

My battery is an Extreme Magna Power model ETX15L from Advanced Auto Parts. I had them do a load test on my old battery which held volts 12.5-12.6V but turned out to be #$%*. It had volts but next to no CCA's. Can't find the CCA rating but it's 220 maybe? Cost me $74.99.

Elan,

I had this problem as well on my F build. I put a brand new rebuilt starter in it. Same problem. It ended up being the starter clutch gear behind the rotor. Those get worn out and cause the starter clutch to slip. The part I am talking about is the portion of the gear the the starter clutch engages onto. Might be worth looking at.

Doubt it's your battery, I have a Scorpion on my 836 and never an issue.

I'd check brandEns suggestion above.
