What's the coldest ride you ever took?
« on: January 22, 2013, 11:14:08 AM »
I regularly ride short distances when its in the 30's.  Yesterday I took the bike to work when it was 10º going in and 5º coming home.  I had about 2-3 minutes left of hand function by the time I got home.  It was like a spacecraft reentering earth, but instead of heat plasma tearing away at any exposed cracks, it was arctic chills in my very own crack.  Not something I'll be repeating anytime soon.

But what about those of you who ice race?  Or anybody else?  What's the coldest ride you ever took?  Photos of missing digits are a plus.

I ride through the winter. My wife got me a pair of Hotfingers mittens from Dick's Sporting Goods for Christmas, they are awesome. No heated grips but they make for comfortable digits!

I tested them last Tuesday night in the low to mid twenties. Worked fine. I try not to ride in much colder than that though. It always surprises me how easy it is though. People think it's gonna be the worst thing ever but if you're dressed for it it's not too bad.

I do cheat a bit...the 750's stay in the heated shop all winter, but I do take the Wing out as long as there is no snow or ice on the roads. No heated gloves and no heated seat. I always tell my wife I have to "top off the tank."  ;) But I do drive every month of the year. I think the coldest I have even been out it was in the teens. Yes, those are fishing shanties on the ice there. Not much for snow yet this year.

I pretty much ride year 'round. I've been out a few times below-0 but not often and only out of necessity. I can stay comfortable in the 20's with my layers, coat, layered gloves, face mask, etc. I don't ride if the roads are snow-covered or look "wet" either on account of black ice.

That was just my buddy's driveway. The roads were clear.

It was in the winter of 78, Below zero, 20 miles from  home on the shortcut, lost the spring clip on the masterlink, pinched a paperclip around the link and took the long way home in case that failed (had friends on that route)50 miles in blue jeans, field jacket, utility boots and leather gloves.
Much to my surprise the chain held and I made it home but I was so cold  that I couldn't get the kickstand down when I stopped. The bike and I fell into a snowbank until I warmed up enough to get out from under it and crawled into the house.
I've had frostbite on my feet 3 times in this life and I don't remember ever being so close to being froze to death as I was on that ride.
I used to ride 20 miles back and forth all winter, rode every snow storm ,didn't own a car. I was young then, now, if it isn't 60 degrees, I take a truck.

It was the winter of '66 or '67 and I had just bought my first new Honda motorcycle, a CL77,  in South Bend from Honda of Michiana. I lived in Culver which is 35 miles away. Of course me being young and with no other way of getting home, I just rode it. It was about 15 or 20 degrees. I was dressed pretty good for the cold ride and I didn't have much of any problems other than my thumbs and my knees. BUT it was cold...

I really didn't mind it too much because when you buy a new motorcycle, well the ride no matter what the temp is still a blast.

I'll ride above 20 degrees to work and other riding but below that is when I opt for the cage. No fairings on the CB and not much to block wind on the VFRs and no heated deats or grips so that is the coldest I go.

I live in Central Texas and it doesn't get real cold here. But, about 10 years ago I was on a summer bike trip in June near The Grand Tetons in Wyoming. We were near Jackson and headed north to Yellowstone and it started snowing! In June.  I had cold riding gear and was wearing two pairs of gloves but we were freezing after riding most of the day. We would periodically stop and warm up by doing jumping jacks on the side of the road, what a sight that would have been. Dont  know what the temp was, most likely mid- twenties.
We ended up saying screw Yellowstone, turned back south and found a motel room and hot shower in Kelly, WY.  Still have not made it to Yellowstone and will never forget my coldest day on a bike trying to get there.

I've ridden to work in the morning over the years fairly routinely with temps in the teens and occasionally below.  It is not a big deal if you dress for it and the roads are dry.  People ask me if I am crazy and I'd ask them if they ask the same question of people who ride snow machines.  The response is usually along the lines of "Oh yeah, I didn't think of that."

I am more inclined to do it if I ride to work in the morning starting out from the garage, because it will be warmer later in the day when time to come home.  The concern isn't for me, but for the old 750.  It will start when cold soaked down into the teens, but the racket the engine makes on start up when that cold is tough to listen to for anyone with even an ounce of mechanical sympathy.  We wouldn't start an airplane at those temperatures without preheating it, and I don't think it is any better for an air-cooled motorcycle engine.

Another thing is that in the teens and lower twenties the oil never really warms up, which is bad for a few reasons.  I can ride the 750 for 30 miles at freeway speeds, and stop and hold my bare hands on the cooling fins with no great discomfort.  (actually it feels good)

By the time I have enough clothes on to ride in anything colder than 50 for any length of time, I feel like I can't move. Thick gloves severely limit manual dexterity. I feel like the Michelin Man, or Ralphie's little brother in Christmas story. I guess claustrophobic is the proper term?

I rode everyday to college about 15 miles for two years in the early 70's.  Jeans, Coat, Loafers openface helmet with a bubble face shield.  Rode once at -2* and the two stroke(Yamaha 180) fouled out on a downtown street.  Sat on the curb and cleaned the plugs which I promptly dropped down a storm drain.  I am no smarter now but I do have better cold weather gear.  That ride would probably kill this 60 year old.

That beats anything this mad Swede has done.  Crazy Danes!  Tip of the hat to you.

Yeah, I was more proud of my old 750 starting on the second kick when it was 20º than for me having made it OK.  Time to update the old Alpinestar gloves, I think.  Everything else on me was fine, woulda been OK another 20-30 minutes, boots OK.  Any recommendations for good gloves?  Not sure I want to go the heated grip route, but...

Try gloves and mitts over them, layering is the key and mitts are always warmer than gloves.

In the winter of 1972, right after I had put my new 750K2 together with the Vetter (before the lowers came out), my El Camino (also brand new then) broke down and had to go into the shop for 2 weeks. And, of course, I had to go on an emergency trip. It was 186 miles from Macomb to western Chicago where I had to go, and the temp never reached above 0 F on the trip up (Friday, daylight), or back (Sunday night). On the trip back, at one point  I off-ramped to a lighted restaurant, thinking I'd get some pie and coffee (a bucket or two), and when I pulled up in front of the restaurant, I couldn't drop either leg. Fortunately, I had pulled up between 2 parking blocks in the snowy lot: as the bike started to fall over, the kickstand nub on the left bumped into the block like a sidestand. I was punchy and didn't even realize I hadn't put the stand down, and managed to get off after a minute and tried to walk around a little: then I saw the parking block holding the bike up! I had to wait a few more minutes before I could get back on and back it up to sidestand it properly.

I've done other winter trips, but nothing like that one!  :o

Yeah, you guys are serious! I rode once in 25 degrees because it was going to be 65 later that day. Leather, gloves, helmet and jeans for 25 miles. Won't do it again! By the time I got to work, I had to stand in the warm shower until I could feel my legs again!

during the 80's i was a long distance despatch rider in england , did 7 winters in a row , always made better money in winter due to there being less bikes around ,and paid by the mile self employed .

, got pretty cold fairly often , but one that sticks in my mind is 7pm on the m40 stokenchurch to watlington section ..clear night sky ,bright full moon ..

been a long day ,wearing 4 jumpers ,two jackets, delta despatch bib .. silk inner gloves, leather electric gloves ,over mits and handlebar muffs ,two pairs of track suit trousers and quilted waterproofs, inner socks, outer socks and quilted derriboots , one thin balaclava one thick one .two scarves .

bike was a honda cx500 on 86000 miles , panniers top box and big double skinned fairing .

very cold , my mind says -18 ,but im not sure now ,and  i have my feet wedged in behind the engine .doing about 70 mph ,downhill, wide open feilds either side ,strong wind , pull in the clutch to change down ,let out clutch ,....nothing ,no drive .

coast to halt ,park on hard shoulder, go to m way phone call it in ,wait to 10 pm for recovery ...3..hours....to keep concious ,walk up and down beside bike  ,but only as far as the leads to my gloves from the battery will reach ,about 6 ft .

vivid memory of the bright moon the deserted motor way ,and the light sparkling off the rd in a million crispy icy twinkles .

the problem ? the clutch inner cable had frozen solid to the outer shroud ,and would not let the clutch engage .

another interesting memory was ,driving at about 60 mph in the black outer lane of the two grooves cut in the snow by the cars ,again at night  on the a40 past oxford , and the handle bars turning full right ,whilst the bike carried on in a straight line ,and i gently pulled them back to straight ,

and also ,the way one automatically starts to cater for strange cold effects , like how it takes about 100 times longer to blink ,so you wait to be in the clear to blink because you know you'll need the time .

regards
robert
just do it .

Damn, HM.  Everything was more dangerous and entertaining in the 70's.

2" of snow on the ground, finally.  We broke the record for snowless winters this year.  Until the salts more or less off the road, riding is done for a while.  Which just means a few weeks, really.

Damn right! ;D
Speaking of that, I am reminded of one occasion back then when I was still in junior high I decided to ride up to the bike shop to see if the parts I'd ordered had come in. (They apparently didn't have phones in the 70's..... ::)
It was ~45° and overcast in February.

On the way there it started misting then drizzling. I rode probably 50 miles through that with an open face helmet, jeans, sneakers, and a nylon insulated coat. None of it water-proof in any way. I assume I had gloves but I don't remember.
By the time I got home I was soaked to the skin and so cold I could barely get off the bike. Dumb.

Damn, HM.  Everything was more dangerous and entertaining in the 70's.

Damn right!

Dumb.

Well, don't keep us in suspense. Had the parts come in?  :)
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Oh, yeah, I forgot the most important part, ha ha NO!  The parts were not in!
And thinking about it I believe I was waiting for a side cover, a tailight lens, and I think a clutch cable!  So I may have ridden all that without a clutch...
Totaled that bike about three months later and broke my leg badly....   It was great to be young, wasn't it?

I was pretty cold one Sunday coming home from Muenster Indiana and the first Honda world tour. It was only in the 30's but most of our clothes were still damp fron saturdays monsoons. Skonnie boy was there too. BlueBeetle froze on sunday too going to Indy!

I think my coldest ride was in 1964/65, 3 of us went to the elephant rally, at the nurburgring, just before we left to make our way home, we had a flat rear tyre, it was snowing really heavy, by the time we got it repaired, it was getting dark, we were on a BMW boxer, and the snow was coming over the cylinders, every mile or so the plugs shorted out  and we had to clean away the snow and start again, it took us 10 hours to get to zeebruger to catch the ferry home to england. but by this time the clutch had given up. When we got back to england, we had to bump start the bike, run and jump onto the back of the bike, as once it was moving it couldn't stop. we rode right round the london ring road, to get to the M1 motorway, when we reached the slip road, to join the M1 it looked like a giant runway, as there were no central reservation at that time, and it was covered with snow,  it took us another 8 hours to get up to Nottingham, a distance of about 120 miles when i got to bed i slept for 48 hours.

Now THERE's a good one!
I saw the front of my 750 engine once fully packed in with snow after it had been sitting toward a storm, but never shorting out the plugs while running! Way cool!

Oh...no pun intended.
