'77 550F basket case to...Supersport Tourer

So. 18 months after (foolishly) selling my super clean '77 550k and buying a '77 Goldwing to do some touring on I found a '77 550F basket case. I talked the seller down from $200 to $160. I'll pick it up in a couple days and start mapping out just what I want to do.

It should be fun. I have 135 days to have it ready for Vintage Motorcycle Days at Road America. No pressure.

Not bad. But I've had a color scheme in my head for over a year. Really I've had the whole project in my head since I sold my 550k 18 months ago. I've just been waiting for the right bike to turn up at the right time (which is to say when I had the money to buy it).

I'm picking it up tonight with my sister's boyfriend. he will use his trailer to hall it down to his house where I do my major repair work.

This weekend I will go through the boxes and see what I actually have and start to plan how I am going to build it.

Dug in the box of parts to take stock.

It seems like I am only missing 4 things: a chain (which I would have replaced anyway), a air box, an ignition switch assembly, and a headlight shell.

I pulled the spark plugs, if they were the ones in it when it ran last they look good. Decent color and no sign of fouling. With the plugs out I was able to turn the engine over by hand using the kick starter.

The carbs were a VERY pleasant surprise. The tops and float bows have been polished as have two of the float bowl drain screws. I pulled all 4 bowls and the carbs are nice and clean inside, although they need fresh o-rings and the one main jet I pulled needed to be cleaned. But otherwise they are in very good shape.

I think I got good value for my $160.

It's got 115 main jets in it rather than the stock 98's. That seems right given the after market exhaust and the pods that are in the box.

Well, finally did something, I procured a frame via eBay.  A bare '75 for $70 including shipping from Michigan to Illinois. It's not pretty, but it's all I needed and with some sandblasting and paint it will look like new.

It doesn't have a title, but I did some research before making an offer and it appears that, since I am buying from a Michigan seller, with the help of a Michigan based friend of mine, getting a Michigan title will be pretty simple. I will need to fill out a form, submit an appraisal (a print out from the NADA site should do) and pay a 6% tax on the value (about $60, see the next paragraph).

The sad thing is that the tax is based on the value of a complete bike and I am only getting a frame. But the all-in cost of less than $150 with the frame shipped to me is still a good deal.

There were a couple of complete bikes around for $400-$450, but both were far away (Detroit and north of Madison, Wi) and in addition to the higher cost of the bikes I would have had to spend $100 in gas going to get them. There was a 650 frame and title in Ohio, but he wouldn't budge off of $150 and wouldn't ship, so again almost $100 in gas to get it.

After I posted my update I realized I never commented on this thread why I needed a new frame.

When going through all the parts last month I noticed a problem with the frame that had been hidden by the gas tank. Someone had cut out the part of the frame where the coils attach.

It could have been the guy I bought it from since his specialty was choppers and bobbers. So maybe he intended to change the head tube angle.

But in the end it was a minor annoyance. The bike didn't come with a title, so I was going to have to replace the frame anyway.

Finally found the tank logo I have been looking for on eBay since I picked up the bike. Two months I have been searching and finally got the search parameters right to track it down.

Somebody else here used this on their project and it looked fantastic. Ever since then it's been on the parts list in my head for a future build.

Today I headed over to Harbor Freight and picked up a handheld spot blaster to get after the rust on the replacement frame. Once I got the hang of it, it was definitely $20 well spent.

I spent a couple very messy hours removing rust (note to self, go buy a hood). When I was done I wiped it down with acetone and primed the whole frame.

I have to admit the primer was a bit of a half assed job, but I just wanted to cover the bare metal from the blasting. In a couple weeks I will go back and clean it up, sand and reprime. For now it is just important that the rust is gone and the bare metal protected.

I don't know if it comes from a particular Honda, the seller doesn't think. I saw them in another member's thread a couple years ago and they just stuck with me.

This bike is the gift that keeps on giving. a couple months ago I found that a piece had been cut out of the frame. Today I decide to strip the old paint off the tank. I turned it over to take a shot of the original color on the bottom and I find that the output for the petcock has been cut off. WTF, more random cutting off of parts. Why? I know the guy I bought it from makes choppers/bobbers, but I don't see how either of the pieces removed would have facilitated that.

So I guess I will now be looking for a replacement tank the same way I tracked down a replacement frame.

I decided to strip the tank and mock up a paint scheme. The center would be a checkerboard pattern rather than solid. I can't decide if I like the gold frame either.
