New tank, inside surface rust from wet sanding?

Hey guys I have a couple small spots of surface rust inside my tank from the painting process, what should I do to stop it and correct it from getting worse?

Put some gas in it with a small dash of 2 stroke oil and swish it around.How long till you will be using it,this spring ?

I would fill it with vinegar to actually reverse the rust. Then you'll want to neutralize the acidity with some baking soda and water rinsed through. And then finally some transmission oil (or something reasonably viscous) to coat the surfaces until spring. Or just fill it with gas/stabilizer.

I plan to start it in the next few weeks and see if I need to clean my carbs.

What kind of bike is it. Can you pop a bowl off the carb to take a peek to see what it looks like in there?

Man, the inside of that tank is beeeautiful! Most of us wish our tanks looked that good. Vinegar treatment might get the spots out but could invite more flash rust. I would recommend swishing some oil around in there if it's going to sit a spell, or top it off with fuel and run it if you're ready to ride!

It's a brand new sportster tank I purchased from tc bros. I just ordered the Kreem kit so that should take care of the rust and seal it.

If its a brand new tank the last thing I'd do would be to line it, I'd try and hit it with a bit of sand paper wrapped around a dowel to remove the spot and flush with gas. Once it and any debris is gone I'd get some 2stroke oil inside or fill it with gas and get it one the bike.

Seriously mate, that tiny amount of rust is almost laughable compared to some of the tanks on the forum that have been cleaned {rust all over the inside} and NOT LINED...... You are worrying about nothing.....    I NEVER line tanks, no matter what anyone tells you, once you have seen and tried to deal with a failed liner you would never touch one again.....  Did i say to NOT LINE THAT TANK..... ;D

                     X 1000 !!   ;)    Apple cider vinegar + some new nuts or washers.  Pour about 1 quart of the vinegar and a hand full of washers or nuts and shake it around off and on for a while. Then let it sit for about 1/2 hour. Empty it and fill with gas. your good to go.  As Retro stated that little bit of rust isn't sh1t. You will be hating yourself if you try to coat the inside. DON'T DO IT !!   ;)   ::)

Yeah buddy I've put some real rust turds to use. Wash them out and put a filter on the line.

Liners are for a very last option or pinhole problems and not to start a war but I have seen to many Kreeme jobs fail,no fun taking that stuff back out  ;)

Holy hell, well I guess I wont be lining it!!!! ha, I did have a little dent in the tank from it falling on my welding table which had to be pulled out with a stud gun. I welded the spot up to be sure the tank wasn't weak in that spot and sprayed it with water/soap and applied air to make sure there wasn't any kind of leak, so I'm assuming all is good. I REALLY appreciate all the info. So do I need to coat it with anything or can I just fill it with gas in a week or so when I'm ready to fire it up?

Pour a bit of two stroke oil in it, roll it around till the inside is coated then drain the excess. You'll just burn the oil out when you run through the first tank of gas.

I never leave them completely empty, just spray in a liberal amount of WD40 or similar , or put a bit of Kerosene or diesel, something oily, and swish it around to give the bare metal some protection until you want to use it.... ;)

Marvel Mystery Oil is also good for coating the tank to prevent rust until you're ready to use it.
