Sandcast barn find.
« on: January 23, 2013, 03:15:50 PM »
This isn't one of you guys, is it? Found on the VJMC website. He did the right thing and told the owner what he has and what it's worth.
Honestly....I don't know what I would have done. Does that make me a bad person?

If he was looking to sell I think that would have been in my trailer. Nobody says you have to steal them.

Do a change-up and re-ask the same question.

Let's say you know nothing about sandcast and you buy it.  Then you find out a few days or weeks or months later, "hey I just bought a sandcast and didn't give the guy what it's worth."

I don't think you need to feel guilty, unless the seller says "I have to sell everything because my wife needs an operation, we're both in our 70s and not insurable, would you at least give me $500 for it?"  Then by all means I'm helping the guy.

But let's face it -- how many of us have bought a machine then found out "hey this deal was much better than I thought" and felt guilty about not calling the seller to say "buddy I didn't mean to but I got way too good of a deal here, let me give you some more cash so I don't come out ahead here."

However if it's an older seller who's in trouble, you bet I'm telling them.  If it's an older seller and they just want their garage space back, and just want the first person who shows up with a truck to get it out there sight -- nah I don't think you say anything.

I bought an XS 650 from a friend at a really great price with the intention of restoring/modifying it for myself. Plans changed and I sold it and doubled my money. I split the profit with my friend.

That is a fair and honorable thing to do.

Curious about the low number but the horn is not on the left.........the clock faces are recessed indicating K1 or later...........real curious about the chainguard.........I have one on an early K0 VIN 1010005

Yes, its a nice find.........and yes, I like to be fair..........but I have yet to get any cash from the many sellers that did not inform me about serious motor issues (bent crank; broken cam; stuck motor with bent rods; ...........

I picked up a nice titled kz1000 for next to nothing that took me minimal work to get running, the seller told me his price. I asked him how firm he was and handed him the cash when he said firm. He and I both knew it was worth more, did I offer him more? Hell no, and he was happy to get it out of his shop and have more room. I would do the same in any situation with a stranger, even if it was a sandcast. Friends or relatives are another story, if people can't do the homework to find out the value of something they are selling its not my place to inform them, cause you can be sure I've done mine prior to showing up to look at it.

My two cents.

If they guy has no idea what he has, he is selling it AND he has given you the price he wants, I am OK paying that price.  If the price discrepancy is wildly off I might split the difference with the seller.

If the guy has no idea what he has and is unsure if he wants to sell it and YOU convince him to sell it for much less than it is worth, you suck.  Its not cool to take advantage of people.

Be honest in life.  Pay your fair share, sell for a fair price.  Make a little less but everyone gets to be happy.

On the subject of sellers calling me back after a sale, I bought a 750 with a ticking sound while running, "it's the exhaust gaskets, they need replacing,"  "Hokay" I said and did the deal.

Turns out it was a rod bearing gone bad, the ticking was too much slop in the piston/con-rod movement.

So the seller calls me a week later, I'm really surprised, he said "did you fix the trouble on the bike, I'm curious?"

"No, turned out not to be exhaust gaskets" I said, "I put in brand new gaskets and the ticking remained, it's a bad con rod bearing."

muffled laughter, "Oh - okay, well good luck."  CLICK.

You take your chances when you're out there, sometimes you apparently get laughed at.  Some dang sellers are mean aren't they.   Most aren't.

Sometimes people just need the money. I got a call about a 750 engine a guy wanted to sell for $1200. Every time I said I'm not sure he knocked $100 off. We eventually ended up at $700. I felt a bit sheepish about it until he was a bike show I had my 750's at and he came up a shook my hand. Oh, it was sandcast number 260.

Might have been me.   $100 bucks got me $2200.   I sent the guy a hundred dollar bill to keep him on the look out.

i would have given more had he not beat the motor out of the frame it was in and left it sitting outside.

Some people do that homework and just don't believe it or try to go further with it.   He knew it was a 1969 Sandcast motor.

If you ever get a chance at a sandcast, go home with it.  Work out the details later.

Interesting.  The old couple that needs the money may have wasted every dime they ever had and are faking their need.  Maybe, maybe not.  I buy and sell thousands of auction items each year.  A room full of people decided an item was worth a dollar.  I bought it and sold it for $300.  Who do i split the profit with in that case?  Here is what i have decided, i pay the sellers asking price, i sell for what the market will bear, i tithe my profits and let the good Lord sort it out.  I have been blessed greatly with this strategy.

The guy walked away.  I guess he didnt have the money or something?  The OP states that the old guy wanted it gone, why would you walk away?  If I didnt have the money I'd be on the phone to somebody, anybody I thought that I could get the cash from.

I bought a '78 CB550K for $50 with a bunch of rust and no carbs, but in good shape overall. That was a god-damn steal, I only found that out once I got on these forums. I haven't talked to the guy since, but once it's done maybe I will pay him a visit and thank him for the awesome deal.
It's almost twice as old as me, I don't know how the hell it works!

I also noticed that the kill switch on that 69 is red not black.  Looks like someone changed out a lot of parts on it for some reason.
