Topic: Crack in lower case (76 550F)

Hey,

While continuing on my rebuild project I have been tearing down the engine and while cleaning the gunk off I found this crack on the outside of the lower case. I can feel the sharp edge of the crack, but it does not appear to affect the oil pain mating surface and I cannot see any evidence of the crack inside.

Should I JBWeld this or have it professionally welded?
Can it be welded? Thoughts?

Can't really tell buy the pic if its a casting flaw,scar or a crack.Casting flaws are not uncommon. You say it does not go all the way through ? Any sign of seepage?

@ekpent, yeah sorry those pics are the best I could do with my phone.

there is nothing inside of the case that I can feel or see that indicates that crack is there. regarding seepage, there was no oil that was coming out of that area before I drained it for teardown.

If it is a casting flaw, I guess I could have it welded up real quick to be safe before I reassemble.

Its a casting flaw just went out and looked both my 550 engines have that same thing. I though it was cracked to the first time I saw it. I wouldnt be worried about it.

Thanks, I got really worried since I never had ones of these bikes before and wasn't sure.
