KZ440 LTD ignition question
« on: February 08, 2013, 09:15:01 AM »
Hey! I have an '81 Kawasaki KZ440 LTD with the electronic ignition and I'm having a ridiculous time finding a pulser coil! Best I found was brand new for $100! >:( Can anyone tell me whether or not I can convert the pulser to the older, traditional points system easily? Thanks!

Why go back to old technology ?  Find a part used or bite the bullet and pay for a new part. Ya don't want to be stranded and left helpless.......been there and done that.   ;)

Is this the part you are looking for ?    ???

Nah. That's the CDI Igniter. I'm looking for the pulse coil (pulser, pulse generator, pick up coil, whatever).

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Kawasaki-KZ-KZ440-Belt-Drive-LTD-440-KZ440-D-Used-Engine-Pulser-1981-/150977595019?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT&nma=true&si=dmcGg1L7juxWXuMw33say9ttUk8%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

I'm looking to possible go back on technology because it seems the older stuff proves more reliable! Go figure. ::) Plus points systems are floating around, dime-a-dozen. The electronic parts seem to be rare and WAAAAY overpriced!

A friend of mine once converted a Kawasaki 250 to points. He ground a crude point cam and fitted VW points. It worked, but it was not elegant by any means. I have a junk '82 550; I'll look to see if I have the pick-up coils if you think they might work on your 440.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Thanks man! 8) The 550 is a 4 cyl. whereas my 440 is a twin but I might be able to hook them up only using the one side. Let me keep scouring fleabay a bit to see if I can find one before you do anything too drastic. I appreciate it though! ;D

My theory is that since the earlier model 440's ('79-'80) had points and the engine was the exact same I ought be able to get something like this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1980-Kawasaki-KZ-440-A-Points-JV9-/360499944339?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item53ef789b93&vxp=mtr

and simply bolt on the earlier generation parts. Would that work? Or am I forgetting something?
