Galvanising fuell tank.
« on: February 07, 2013, 02:51:32 PM »
We all know the struggles with the ethanol laced gas and tank coatings. Has anyone investigated the possibility of galvanising the inside of  tank?

I believe the fuel and additives may react with the zinc and end up in the combustion chambers and environment.

I have no concern about ethanol reacting with zinc any more then it reacting with steel. I was interested in what it would actually take to galvanise the inside of the tank and thought perhaps someone with home zinc plating experience may have an idea.

There were several experiments with zinc when lead was removed from gas, don't remember what happened?

There is no good reason to galvanize a gas tank.

I'd like the outside galvanized then lacquered, fresh galv with the flake patterns that appear looks great. I've just never gotten around to trying it and distortion is a concern.

well, thats called hot dipping right? its a messy way of zinc plating. im having my parts electro galvanised. much neater and a nice finish, mush like glavanised bolts you buy..

but i think which ever way you do it, it will get into the tank...if thats what you're fine with happening.

Takes some nasty chemicals to galvanize, not worth it in my opinion. Also paint won't stick to galvanizing on the outside.

paint will stick mate, just need to use an etch primer.
