Cheapo, I think Terry hit it on the head, the engine rebuild would be very time consuming. There are many bits on these bikes that need rechroming aside from a whole engine. What you would (hopefully) offer is a reliable and affordable place to get these parts rechromed. Wheels come to mind as one of the bigger items.

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

Well to get back to topic for a bit..... I would pay 1000-1200 for a 836 punched motor with some head work done and a mild cam. you know, work like what the headmaster does.

Back on the side track now, I like CBJs previous avatar. A chick with good knockers is welcome before my eyes any day!

Hey Eldy, in reality, an 836cc top end for your K8 engine will cost you that, and more. The following prices are "guesstimates", but not far off the mark:

Wiseco 836cc kit $400.00
Cylinder Boring $200.00
Megacycle cam $300.00
Mild head work by Mike $400.00 (plus)
Heavy duty stud kit $100.00
New H/D cam chain $50.00
Top end gasket set $100.00 (the Wiseco kit comes with a head gasket, but you still need a base gasket, O rings, seals, etc)

There's $1550.00 without trying too hard, (you doing the work, with no M3 cam chain tensioners, new rockers as recommended by Megacycle, Dyna ignition etc) so the dream of a cheaper "performance" engine, is just that, a dream. You might be lucky enough to find some good used parts on Ebay for a bit less, or get real lucky like Sean and I did when we bought that complete worked 900cc engine with an oil cooler and ARD magneto for $400.00 complete, but these kinda bargains are few and far between. That's why Tom would be a lot better off with a Krome Exchange service, IMHO. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Well prices will vary depending on where you go. Since I would be doing more of a mild build, there is a possibility of using my existing valves and springs and just possibly replacing guides. ofcourse that will depend on inspection. As i as not going to be racing or anything like that, I was actually looking at a web cam which I asked about here before and no one at the time said anything bad about them and they are cheaper than magecycle. Boring of course depends on the shop. You bring in the bare cylinders and it will be sheaper than if they have to disassemble anything.

A tsubaki chain was about 30 - 38 the last time I found one. And I have seen wiseco's for less.

I know what you are saying but there are ways of cutting costs while still getting a good engine. I know someone here got a good build and it ran about 1200 with mike doing the head. Wish I could remember who it was for sure though. But mike gave me an estimate of the head work cost. So with what I want to do, I could actually do it for about 1200.

If he can get a number of people to do that engine thing of his, it probably would work out better for sure though. If I could get one built off the bat instead of just stock and even heavier than the original cause of the chrome, I would do it.

I will also possibly get a donor bike at the end of our summer here to use for parts unless things are really in good shape and that could help offset the cost if I part it out on evilbay!
