ROTFLMAO!! Look - I'm an old buzzard, so take what I say here with a grain of salt. But surely, you must realize that us old buzzards have been riding these bikes and drilling out baffles for a lot of years. Has anyone tried it? Sure, most of us have. You drill the baffles or remove them, and you lower the back pressure...which reduces engine performance. But your butt dyno hears that noise and convinces you that the bike has gained power in addition to making all the chicks think your pecker is a foot long. Not. So whether it "works" for any particular person is going to depend entirely on what that person expects to gain. Noise? You got it. Performance increase? Not so much.

Stu, I've been "compensating" for years! ;) Heck, back in the day, we just took the mufflers off! It was good for at least a couple inches. :) ;D

Hi Paul,
Regarding the muffler removal, I recently had an experience that drives home the performance point. CB500K with MAC 4 into 2 system. Otherwise, completely stock and runs like new. So I'm riding with the wife and take a fast exit ramp off an Interstate when the right muffler bracket breaks and the muffler goes AWOL - only to be crushed by the car behind me. But I didn't realize the muffler was gone. All I knew was the bike suddenly became horribly loud, and I couldn't get it over 45 mph without going WOT. Then Wifey says, "wasn't there something bolted on below my right footpeg..."  :o  I think that episode actually cost me a few inches ;)

I wouldn't give up complete hope.  Drilling small holes in the baffles can increase the volume (noise) and not appreciably alter the back pressure such that rejetting is required.  Here's an example:

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=106651.0

I agree that removing the baffle will alter things quite a bit.  In the link provided, the person drilled holes, but left the exhaust opening the same.  How much you want to "try" and change depends on what you are willing to do.  Willing to reset the idle mixture, maybe shim the jet needle, replace the main jet, etc?  If you are NOT willing - then you'd best leave things alone.

1978 CB750A (upgrading very, very slowly)

Past bikes - Honda: SL350, CX650C, CB900C, CB1000C, CM450A; Kawasaki: several 1972 750 H2's; Suzuki: TC90J.

Bikes I want: CX650ED, a mid-sized japanese V-twin with ABS.
