is there an easy way to check valve clearances
« on: February 01, 2013, 10:02:09 PM »
Hello
I have a CB750 72.  I want to check the valve clearances but it looks like a pain in the arse.  Do you guys just bend the end of the feeler gauge and try to get in there or can you lift the valve cover and get to them that way or just leave it until the engine comes out one day
Thanks for any tips and help
Scott

get a fine wet stone and sort of make a slight ramp both sides of the feeler tip so they slide in easier.

I got a set of .002 and .003 feeler gauges that have a 45 degree bend from the parts unlimited catalog at the local motorcycle shop.

Motion Pro, part #P552, less than $6.00

Here's what it looks like:

After about 500 times doing it you can estimate very closely by the amount of rattle when tugged on.  As mentioned above, a bent thickness gage, good lighting, and patience.
