1982 CB750sc:BRAT RACER First bike newbie build
« on: January 30, 2013, 09:57:43 AM »
Welcome all to the beginning stages of my long journey of renewing a old 1982 750SC into a beautiful brat racer. For a little bit of background I bought the bike July 2012 and it sat at my buddies place until this week. It came with no tank, but a seat, title, and a whole lot of nostalgia. I am indeed new to the motorcycle scene but have been wrenching my whole life. I have a Ford AAA certification from high school and whilst no mechanic, hopefully i can pull this build off, plus with help from all of you! I want to finish this project in time for the new riding season but might just be high hopes

As we know pics are required :D. . . lets get started!!

Not bad for one days work. I've got the carbs, seat, headlight, bars, wiring harness, exhaust, and coils all pulled. I really need to figure out posting pictures as well.

Also I will be refurbishing and selling parts i don't need if anyone wants them to help fund the build :D

The bolts are zinc plated. If you are going for nice original then have them re zinc'd. Otherwise use them as is or get stainless.

Thanks retro rocket good to get some replies especially from a forum great like yourself! The way I see I'll get a lot more traffic once I get to the meat and "taters" of the build :)
Roach carver: I thought about doing the zinc plating but I figured if I do stainless it would be less than the caswell kit, only I can't find a nice set any suggestions??

Welcome!

Interesting to see a "newer" (DOHC) model being worked on....  I'll be following along as well.

I've found they come apart a lot faster than the going back together part. ;D

Take care.

Hey fellers just a quick update and some questions. No real progress on the bike worth mentioning but did start on rebuilding the controls, and starting into the engine.  I went ahead and bought the stainless bolt kit from z1 and some other bits.

I'm now looking at getting a tank I was wondering what tanks fit the dohc other than the stock ones? I don't want to ruin a good tank by cutting it up to fit, I feel someone else could use it.

I have found that the 350 tanks from 71-72 may fit as well as the 750k tanks. What do you guys think???

Sorry no pics  ;D ;D ;D

I have seen the older cb750 tanks on the later frames although I imagine there was some metal modification to accomodate the different tunnel/backbone.

Correct, the boldor or dohc frames have side rails that rise up to meet the centre backbone before going back down toward the front steering head section , so modification to the underside of the tank would be essential to make it fit....

Cylinder's pretty gunked up

Not sure if it's the same as my 750 SOHC but I went around my cylinders with a rubber mallet and gave it some good solid whacks from all directions. It eventually gave up and popped off.

Hey guys so I went to clean the pistons and just wanted to get some advice

number 4 the rings are really tight any suggestions for getting them off

And on number 1 the rings are really loose

I havent measured them yet, need a new caliper, but the cylinders all look good and so do the skirts. Should i be apprehensive about the differences?? ???

Chris that's not in the budget for this build I want to keep the motor costs down to get her back on the road asap.

IW yeah they are pretty much seized up I just don't know how to get them off.

Any suggestions maybe just a soak?  ???
