Noob '75 750K Owner from Sacramento, CA
« on: January 30, 2013, 01:14:06 PM »
Hello all.  Hopefully this is not too long winded to an introduction.

I have been perusing this forum for the past few years in preparation for this moment.  I am proud to say that I took the plunge yesterday and purchased a 1975 CB750K.  The bike is a non-runner, but for $200 I thought it was worth the gamble.

I will start off by saying I know next to nothing about motorcycles and don't even know how to ride.  I was inspired a few years back by a friend who restored an old CB77 with no prior mechanical knowledge whatsoever; I mean the guy had never owned a screwdriver before getting the bike.  But, with a lot of patience, enthusiasm, and help from folks like you, he managed to do a fine job and is now an avid rider with multiple bikes in good repair.  I thought if he can do it, then so can I.

Although I do not have any motorcycle knowledge, I do have some basic automotive mechanical experience and enjoy working with my hands.  Nothing super involved or meticulous like rebuilds, but I have done things like oil changes, perform tuneups, change starter motors, bolt on mods like intake manifolds and headers, set points, set ignition timing etc.

Like I said, the bike is not currently running, but it does turn over and is in decent condition externally.  The bike was dropped on the left side and ended up in a tow yard where it sat unclaimed until I purchased it yesterday.  Although it was dropped, the damage was mild except that the stator/dynamo cover is munched and has a giant hole in it, and I am having problems shifting, which I imagine could be a major problem.

I have since removed the stator and shift assembly cover and took some photos.  I have some specific and really noobish questions and was wondering where I should post them.  Any and all help would be much appreciated.

Here are some photos of the bike.

Thanks,

Zac

Welcome from North Carolina and to the world of sohc4 Honda's. By the 2 pics you posted looks like you did good for $200. Of course bike has been repainted and has non factory seat. What shape are the factory pipes. If for some reason you decide to run different pipes and if they are solid I would definitely be interested in buying them from you. Post some more pics of your new project when you can. What are your plans for the K5.

Good luck

Welcome from Texas.  The stator cover damage is no biggie but the trans not shifting would really concern me, normally these transmissions are bulletproof.
Pull off the shifter cover, maybe it is rubbing against the shaft? (I've seen this). Get an impact driver to remove the screws, only about $15. And if you have oil in the motor, some will drain out when the left covers are removed.
Good luck

I bent the end of my crank once on an accident like that where I broke the cover. When I put the new replacement cover on the engine would only turn 1/2 a turn and then it bound up in that cover and would turn no more. Check the crank end to see if you have a visible wobble.

So since my initial post i have torn the bike completely apart, bagged and tagged everything, and started making plans for my cafe-ish build.  I plan on starting a project thread once I have my photos in order.  Also, Being a noob to forums as well as bikes, I did not realize that I had to manually check to see if members replied to my post, I assumed there would be some kind of flag or alert in the header when I logged back in.  I thought nobody cared  :'(

ekpent, the crank checked out and once I replaced the stator cover and chased down some electrical issues, the bike kick right over and ran quite well.  Even seemed to be tuned fairly well.

Stev-o, I pulled the cover off and the shift arm spring fell right out.  I completely disassembled the shift and stopper assembly, and carefully put everything back together.  Seems to be shifting fine now, but I havent actually ridden the bike yet.

dhall, I am seriously considering running Crapy's 4-1 Yosh pipes.  I will take some pictures of my pipes and post them here.  They seem to be in good shape, no rust etc.  PM me if you are still interested.

Thanks to all for the warm welcome.  More to come soon.
