my old ride cb750k6 restoration
« on: February 01, 2013, 11:43:55 AM »
Hi and thank you for this forum.

My name is Joël
I am new to all this forum things, but i have a fond interest in old and oldish motorcyclres.
My journey sarted in the year 2000 when my dad, who restores brits cars ,sent me a barn find cb750k with 8 000 miles on it. Freebe thanks dad. Now, besides new tires, carb clean and a battery, it was a new bike at verry low cost.I did have to make a good cleanup, take dust off, but that was it.
Drove that thing all over Bc coast and islands. The Mallahat, Humpback road, why not, shawnigan lake road, all the way to Toffino. Vancouver- Wistler (on the old pre Olympic road...) just to grab a coffe, the list goes on.
I moved back to Québec, in 2004 and stored my bike in a shed at a frends house, thinking it was to be fine until the next summer but, next summer turned out to be 8 years later..... and the shed turned out to be verry far and a bit wet in the winters...
Now the bike is here, in bad shape but okay i guess.
I am in the process of tear and restoration now. fun thing to do and share,
Might need info too.
Thanks
À+

And my ride now almost all apart .
I will send frame for powdercoat, same black finish.
Should i file smooth the welds or leave as is?
I will make shure to include all the pictures from the start, and the rest of the process.
Thanks for watching

Good luck!  If you found this group be prepared to enter the cult !    Some have done amazing jobs with these old relics, others have gone off the chart. The hardest part is waiting for parts!

Personally, I don't think most people look so closely at the welds once it's all done. Depends how much of a "show" quality bike you want to create though. If you're going for a high gloss color on your frame then the rough welds will stick out more. If you go for a semi gloss or matte finish then it probably won't show much at all.

Anyway, you're off to a good start. ha

Even if i wanted to hack the frame and customize it i just could not, it is too much of an original to do so, everything is there, exept the airbox... And in pretty good shape.
Pipes and all just a bit rusty but all there. I will go for a stockish daily driver.

My friend Stephane came and help me. Kind of hard to push a bike with flat tires and a stuck front brake.

Paint yes, frame, swingharm, side and center stans for now, battery box too. I also have a gasket set to throw in the motor. The top end is seeping oil a bit from old gaskets, also will polish aluminium covers.
For the gas tank and side covers i'm leaving as is for this year, the paint is still bright and shinny, but might paint cylinders and head black if i cant remove succesfully the corosion, tricks?? Someone?
There is the seat i need to deal with, stupid me i sat on it at minus 30c and it cracked...
Hope to be riding next summer, but my job takes alot of time and i can only spare one day a week on my project..so i will see.

Are you saying that you were able to ship the bike from BC to Quebec for $250?  That's almost free. Nice looking bike!

Welcome to the forum Crom and I like your thinking. I've got a K6 also and there great bikes. Your bike is to nice and to close to factory to start chopping it up. I'm a big fan of the stock bikes myself. Good luck with the restore.

I agree with Dhall.... Everbody is entitled to their own opinion... BUT the stock bikes are so god damn beautiful. In my book a mild "customisation" is ok. But to change the most beautiful features like the tank, side covers, stock pipes etx. is a brutal crime :) ( O.C there can be special occasions like rust etc.) But to change all these stock things to something new, plasty "Sh*it", drill some holes turn down a pair of clubman is to me crazy :)

my 2 cents !

Today is a bits and pieces day,
Has anyone ever fixed a horn?? mine make a gazoo buzzing sound. What to do??

I dunked my headlamp ears in molasses, two week ago, i will check it out tomorrow,  see if it is rid of all the rust
Found this trick from an old brits car restorer, it really works well and does not arm paint or chrome, just rust.

Still have to clean the carbs, I will be working with a home made soda blaster, I do have the use of a full range of tools and a workshop at work, and a big compressor too.
I will also polish the float covers, i think it will be nice and clean looking.
A little modification besides carb and petcock rebuild, is inline filters.
Notice my side cover is cracked, It never bothered me i leave as is for this years project.
