Queenslands wild weather
« on: January 26, 2013, 03:21:01 PM »
How's everyone else in Qld fairing with this wild weather?  We are now have flash flooding everywhere around here, and the river is starting to come up.  Until last night we had had 10" of rain over the past couple of days, last night we had over 12" between midnight and 5:30 this morning.  At one point during the night I looked outside and the 4" overflow on the water tank was running solid and water was running over at the inlet.  It has gotten to the point even the ducks are huddled in the chook house.  The missus' greenhouse is looking a little worse for wear from the wind hamming it constantly for the last 3 days.  We have gotten off relatively lightly so far, considering there were small tornados reported within 100km from here.

:)Heard on the ABC news early this morn about the Tornado through Burrum Heads.
Real nice place there.
I can remember the Lorikeets in the hundreds coming in at sunset.
There's been bugger all rain here in Darwin since it's all been sucked over your way.
Just hot & windy.
Even the pool water is warm.
I had sweat running down the outside of my neck & cold beer on the inside yesterday.
Typical Oz Day in Darwin.   ;D
If I was you
I'd be worried about me.

I've spent today & yesterday chasin' people leaving lights on, clipping tyres on kerbs, locking their keys in & assorted other problems. I was soaked through today.
My tank's overflowing as well so just had a very long hot shower.
Looking at the radar, it sure does look heavy down your way Dave. It should be finished here in a couple of hours I reckon. That won't help those dealing with creeks nearby though, there's a lot of water to run off yet.
Last year I joined a support group for procrastinators.
We haven't met yet.

About 11 this morning it cleared up here as abruptly as it began.  There is water everywhere, to get from one side of town to the other you need to drive an extra 10km, last I saw the flood level was expected to peak at 9 metres with the high tide tomorrow morning.  It's crazy to think, this time last week I was carting water from town because we were that low, and the backyard wasn't much more than bulldust.  Now the tanks are overflowing and the backyard looks like an inland sea, but it never ceases to amaze me how quickly everything greens up.  I just wish the bloody internet would come back up to speed, it is slower than dial-up, that is when it works :-\.

One small tree , one big branch came down over night and now we have a 35-40 foot tree leaning over the neighbors house and the wind is still gusting to 70MPH+... Oh, and the letter box is gone..... :o   We are ok though.... ;)

It has all but calmed down here now, the skies are still grey and we're having the occasional light shower.  They have revised the flood warning and are estimating a peak at around 11m, which would be the highest flood since 1893.  Even now it is the highest it has been since 1974 :o

I have a few photo's to put up once the internet is fast enough again to allow it, at the moment it is about as fast as dial up.  I went into town earlier today to get some groceries, the water was around the 10 metre mark, it is still predicted to hit 11 metre some time tonight.  As it was half the town was under and it is a mission getting from one side to the other.  It is amazing how much water is coming down the river.  There is only one bridge across the river still open and as you drive across it you can feel it swaying underneath you :o.

It's a pity you can't send all that water down here men, we need to put out a lot of fires right now..............  :-*
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Thank you banana benders  for sending that rain down south. Its been raining 2 days non stop here at Lake Macquarie. Best of all its raining in Coonabarabran where my son lives on a property that was less than 10 minutes from the fires that went through there the other week (50 homes destroyed). He works at the observatory at Siding Springs and will be going back to work tomorrow for the first time since the fires. His mother is resting easier now that the fire's no longer a threat.

Typical of this country in Summer though, the top half is under water and the bottom is on fire :-\.

Damn, I only just heard this on the news, hope you're all safe chaps. :(
I only caught the end of it but it looked like the winds had whipped up a load of foam off the sea and dumped it on a town.
When Andrew (Trueblue) came to the UK we were flooded and it's no different now months later, so you're not on your own guys. ;)

It just seems to be following me everywhere I go Sam.  The internet is almost back to normal here so I have been uploading some photos.  Some of them I took yesterday and some others I took today a couple of hours after it peaked.  We had a peak of 10.65m which is the highest it has been since 1893.  They had a levy bank setup in the CBD, this is the first time I have ever seen the water reach it and all it managed to do was delay the inevitable.  There's quite a few people who are going to be n a world of hurt once this is all over because quite a number of them have let their insurance lapse because of the rises in premiums since the floods in Brisbane 2 years ago.

This is what we woke to on Sunday morning.  Luckily we are high enough so we have no worries from river flooding.

Our neighbours house

Yesterday in the CBD

The water is normally 14m below this bridge

The CBD this afternoon

The levy bank didn't do a hell of a lot

I have just spent the last 2 days in Bundaberg (Thursday and Friday).  Rescuing some trucks that went under in the flood, one of our customers has a depot up there and had 5 trucks and a forklift go under.  Talk about a mission, two days and 28hrs solid work later, the only one I didn't manage to salvage was the one old POS Hino that already had a leg out of bed from before the flood.  The level of devastaion up there is almost unfathomable.  There are some neighbourhoods that were considered flood free and the water went right through the houses.  Most houses have a huge pile of stuff out front that has been ruined by the water.  The cricket field and netball courts are covered in at least 18" of mud.  There are something like 40 houses that have been lifted off their foundations and even one that got sat in the middle of the road.  It even got into the rum distilary :o
