Tank Emblem Removal
« on: July 15, 2006, 05:31:03 AM »
Hello all.

Getting ready to strip and repaint my '78 550 tank.  Only two little dings on the tank but the clear coat and pinstripping is in horrible shape.  The bike has been sitting for almost 20 years.  I was quite pleasantly surprised at how clean the inside of the tank was, almost no rust!!!

I had a question about removing the emblems, did a search and found a good post about removing them.  I just wanted to double check with everyone that they should be held on with just some adhesive and posts correct?

I just don't want to be prying only to find there is a nut or something.

Thank you all.

Using a putty knife, pry between the "H" and "O" and the "D" and "A". That is where the pins are. Alternate back and forth so the emblem doesn't break.

....and be careful to not lose the clips that hold the emblem on.  Also,
it helps to use two skinny tools on opposite sides of the emblem so that
when you pry them off you don't twist the post of the emblem sideways
and break it off. I used two xacto knifes very carefully. A putty knife seems
a bit wide to me.

On many of the old tanks the little clips will be rusted and break off.  They
can be prized out and replaced.....DSS has them.

Thank you for the tips.  I used a small putty knife, top and bottom, and the emblems popped right off.

There is nothing like having 100 mechanics at your fingers tips for some great free advice...   ;D   ;D

You're an amateur the first time....that you break something.  The second
time you are a mechanic.  ;D ;D
