Exhaust effect performance?
« on: July 17, 2006, 11:27:29 AM »
1979 CX500

The bike has had the baffles removed.  (or they could have rotted out)

Could this effect the performance of the bike?

Thanks

It would allow for more airflow through the engine, so it could lean out the A/F mixture. You would have to re-jet to match the free-flowing exhaust. It's probably pretty loud, too. However, after it's jetted it should run better than original (if you can get it all matched up).

I was given a non-running CX500 in very tatty shape.  However, it did have a nearly new Mac 2 into 1 on it.  I rebuilt the carbs several times during the resurrection.  But, it never ran with much power.  I was pretty sure it was going to need jetting mods.  The pipe was so loud though, that I couldn't stand it.  I swear it was louder than open piped Harleys.   I did some experimenting with baffles and material to quiet it down.  As it approached acceptable noise levels, I noticed the throttle response steadily improved.  It was still louder than I wanted, when I found a nearly new stock exhaust on EBAY, and won the bid.  I put them on and have no regrets.  The throttle response is good at all positions, it scoots when asked, and is quiet enough to avoid police calls in residential areas.  No need to bother with jetting changes.  Maybe the Mac pipe would have worked better at WOT on the track.  But, for a well mannered street bike, the CX is pretty nice, now.

Well I came up with a decent set of pipes and put them on.

What a differance!  The bike runs smoother and sounds so much better!
Thanks for the help!

Also twotired, if you need parts for your CX, drop me a line, I have a parts bike.  I would be happy to help out a fellow member.  (Cheaply, of course!)
