another clutch question(s)
« on: July 09, 2006, 12:06:30 PM »
on my 73 750...it looks to me if I had more clearance (clutch compressed) between plates, I would have less drag and better shift...right?...does the length of the 4 bolts actually limit the amount of possible compression?...if so, it looks to me  like I could achieve what I was looking with a slightly longer bolt and slightly longer springs(like Barnett's)...or I'm just wishful thinking? ??? 8)

Longer bolts won't help, as the clutch is designed to have the bolts tighten all the way down to the shoulders. You should check the adjustment of the actuator. Loosen all the adjusters on the cable and the lever. Remove the clutch cover (the one that hides the cable end) and loosen the jam nut on the actuator. With a screwdriver tighten the actuator adjuster screw until you feel resistance. Then, back it off a quarter turn and retighten the nut. Now, adjust the cable and lastly the lever.

yes I understand the stock set-up and adjustments...I'm trying to think of a way to "add" extra swing or action(for lack of better words) between the plates...thanks ;)

Search around for my post on "modifying the clutch hub" for CB750. It involves adding some extra oil holes in the hub to accomplish the very thing you're looking for. One post even has some pictures!  ;)

thanks guys...yea I knew about hondaman's modification, which I did a while back...thanks...I've got new plates , metal and fiber and the last time I went through it I install new OEM springs(they were surprisingly cheap!)...anyway the stock springs really seemed to help...on the part I call the inner clutch(the plates slide on it), when does it need replaced?...the reason I ask is I can see(and feel) ridges and worn spots...or do you just emory cloth the valley smooth?...looks to me like this area needs to be babybut smooth for proper plate movement ??? 8)

I might be a bit thick...I don't quite understand which part you're describing. Can you get a pix of it?

The clutch hub usually gets grooves in it within the first 1000 miles or so, because it is wearing in to match the plates. Not to worry. This is one of those sources of metal filings that the oil filter gets to catch after a rebuild...  ::)

thanks hondaman....just wasn't sure...I know on H-D's the grooves will cause the plates to "stick" instead of sliding smoothly...emory cloth usually is used to prolong replacement...thanks for your responce and info ;)
