Greetings from Finland (the Funland)
« on: August 31, 2012, 05:24:38 AM »
Hey all,

I have a 1977 Honda CB750K7. It's my first bike, but at the same time my second one. (I bought one, which got stolen after a week, and then my current one with the insurance money.)

I really like the bike. This year (2012) is my first full season, and I was hoping the be able to just ride it and locate possible problems to fix during the winter. But as always, planning is not the same as doing. So far, I've ended up on the roadside due to electrical problems and clutch problems. The former was fixed by replacing the ignition lock and the latter is a very recent problem and is still waiting to be repaired. (Partly why I joined here was to get tips and help with that.)

Looking forward to owning the bike for some time and learning about wrenching, but hopefully time spent on the road will exceed that spent in the garage. Still applies for the time being.

What's the bug with the clutch?
See SOHC4shop@gmail.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

Hey there,

Many moons have passed since you posted, but I'll respond anyway.

I'm still not absolutely sure what the issue is, but speaking to some of the veterans over here in Finland, they suspected it's the lifter assembly. (Specifically, wear on the small protruding bit on the disc pictured at the bottom.) They even went as far to guess I could fix it by simply adjusting the clutch lever, but I got myself the parts to replace the lifter assembly.

As you can tell, I haven't yet got around to pulling the clutch apart, but I'm hoping to do that before driving season arrives. Luckily (in a sense), that's still a fair bit of time away...

What are the symptoms?

One thing to keep in mind if you get inside the clutch, the 77 and 78 models had an upgraded clutch and use some different parts than earlier bikes. Be model year specific if you buy replacements or check in here for help. The upgrade was intended to eliminate some extra space within the basket that created rattle. Some parts can be mixed.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

I'm aware that there are differences from earlier models. I tend to consult the CMSNL website, because it's very meticulous in things like that. Sometimes to the extent that I become paranoid about ordering parts. :-D

The symptom was that the clutch would sometimes "snap" when pulling the lever back, and not disengage without manually by pushing the lever inside the clutch cover back.
