Is anyone near New Hampshire that owns a 550 that Anders can borrow to develop the 550 upgrade kit?

Just so everyone is clear the 750 and 550 are very different the 750 kit is designed and works great I have sold many of them. The 550 needs to be designed and tested. I own a fleet of 750 and never owned a 550 I need to get one so I can measure it and design a kit. The last time I took a pole of people that wanted 550 kits I thinks there was something less than six interested.

Glad you've recovered and back on your way to good health.

Where are you buying your metal from, Anders? $600 for 4" 6061 seems REALLY HIGH. As for a 550 system to have as a development, what all would you need? I can perhaps provide you the components to help you along.

Agreed. It's definitely aimed more at HiPo/race use. Probably not ideal for regular use in traffic.

  Hi calj737,
I'm in NH have operated my machine shop from 1989 what does 4" 6061 cost where you are? I need a complete bike to measure then test I would never sell a kit without testing it.
there are some around New England  I should be able to find one.

Hey Cal, I wonder if GV would be willing to let Anders borrow one of his 550s.

I can't speak for Cal, but I'm in Seattle and at the ThyssenKrupp warehouse by my work an 8ft length of hot finish 6061 4" round is $350, cold finish is $600. This is for will-call pickup. Delivery adds up really quick with pieces that heavy, I imagine.

I never heard of hot and cold finish Al.....sounds like maybe steel.
We usually pay 3.5- 4.5 per pound and a length would be 12ft..
Off to check weight...... 185 lbs for 12 feet.

Anders - check here:
https://www.metalsupermarkets.com/bostonnorth/#AboutUs

They sell anything in "any size". You don't need to be 8', or 12' if you only need 27" (as an example). I bought a 42"x60"x3/8" plate of 6061 for under $500. A 4'x6'x5/8" plate of cold rolled for less than $400. I haven't bought 4" aluminum stock from them, but I know it won't be expensive unless you're ordering in 12'-20'.

Hot is just regular ol' extrusion. Cold finish gets drawn through rollers to relieve internal stress, has better crack/fatigue resistance and tighter tolerances. I think 6061-T6 becomes T651 when it's cold worked, but most places I've bought material from just call it cold finished or cold drawn.

All the 6061 I've bought has been extruded 10-12 feet long.

I know a local motorcycle shop that buys large rolls of 6061 (6", 8" and 9" diameter) and has them pre-cut into discs, and delivered for machining. He does this all through the local Metal SuperMarket and finds their pricing better than others.

If you don't need 10'-12' at a time, they can be a great source for you. (Okay, disclaimer: I really want you to get going a 550 system  ;))

I always like to have some 4inch around for wheel spacers, adapters, etc.... I usually get 1-2 feet at a time..

If you get under a length though, then price per pound goes up...
And how much you buy every year affects your pricing.
