Need a kick start approach to the 500/550 alt replacement to inject funding into the r&d ?
$100 investment yields $50-75 off the system for the first 10 donors?
Maybe?

Anders if you do a kickstarter project I'll fund. I desperately need some more juice on my 77 550.

Just rode home from NH this evening after picking up my CB750K4 that had been left with Anders for the alternator upgrade. Bike started up easily, headlight seemed to be superbright even at idle (no dimming) but maybe that was just because it was 9pm and dark! Rode the 74 miles home at a good pace and the bike felt smooth and very responsive  -this would be due to the newly cleaned carbs no doubt ;)

Anyway looking forward to the Fall when I can run heated gloves and heated jacket and not have to worry about running out of juice. Photos of the setup to follow...

thanks Anders! Very professional setup and as always quality workmanship!
cheers
Andy

OK Andy, calendar is "at press" so that check box is checked off. So, now other than the family commitments and other things to catch up on...we know you had outfitted your bike with the wiring for the heated gear and we all know it's been plenty cold (shut-up ARiZONAns and TEXans and CALIFORNIAns who enjoy the warmth consistently year round) ((boy I miss AZ even the high desert I was at ~5000ft))
So, how about a report on the heated gear and your enjoyment of the 750 with that nice charging system?  Might help inspire some of us...and make others of us wishing we had it available on the 500/550.
I have a higher output used stator for my CX500 when I take the time to pull the motor and check the timing chains and replace the main and oil and water pump seal (what we call a triple bypass on the CX motor). I have the Ignitech upgrade for the CDI to replace the stock CDI and it doesn't need the highspeed and low speed coils so I can get away with the stator upgrade to allow me to have enough Amperage to spare for heated gear. The Ti ignition bikes had higher output stators allowing the use of some heated gear, early CXs do not.
Unfortunately, we don't have a bolt in replacement for the CB500/CB550 yet.

So, I understand heated jackets but where do you need the heat in the pants.  Normally the seat and back of my legs get coldest when outside just working in cold weather. Riding it is similar I have found. With the riding position you wouldn't want heat where your legs are bending at the back of the knee and the front are going to have more exposure unless you have a big fairing with lowers to hide behind...

Let me tell you for me at least its fingers (hands), toes (feet) more the digits than the rest, and my knees. My knees go numb very quickly and then become uncomfortable.

David

David and others

Yes I bought Anders alternator upgrade and like Anders have a few thousand miles on it. Not only is it great for heated gear (for me Gerbing jacket liner and Gerbing gloves) it has 13V at idle! Battery starts right up every time!

Here are my leads to attach heated gear -

And the First Gear dual heat troller

Riding in cold (so far 15 -32F) is now pretty easy and no longer get that tired fatigued feeling after a cold winter days ride. Warm and toasty the whole time making me more alert and not shivering thinking about how Ill warm my gloves up on the cylinder block when I stop (done that for years!). I ride in all weathers and have been winter riding for 20 years. As soon as Anders had this bolt in kit I jumped on it - I mean how many times can you buy precisely machined parts for a 40 year old bike!? Something that will fit right in, make your bike easier to start and give you a range of options in running heated gear or other electrical accessories (if thats what you like). Lucky for me Anders is only 1 hr away and is workmanship is second to none. The guy literally lives and breathes SOHC. He has been doing this since these bikes were new!! Anders is Mr Quality when it comes to machining and knowing SOHCs! Sort of like what MikeR is to SOHC engine building!!   8)

If you like to ride when its cold but dont want to bundle up under many layers and want to remain alert when riding in the cold and like to have you bike start easier and run better then this alt upgrade is for you! Make the investment you wont regret it!!

cheers
Andy

Would love to see this happen for the 550. I could help donate R&D money as well if it meant getting a better charging system in my 550.

-13F this for this mornings ride to work!  A new personal record for me.  It sure would be nice to have more heated stuff to use besides my Cabellas heated gloves, that run on their own batteries.  What could we do to get this up and rolling for the 500/550s?

-13 is way to cold for me. If we can get ten 550 guys that are willing to commit to buy one at $600 I will design and prototype a kit. My guess would be around six weeks until prototype is ready for testing. So the next thing would be to start a list of guys that want one.

I will put my name down for a system. I unfortunately cannot help with the prototyping as my bike is still in pieces but I think this thing is so killer that I would love to see it on my bike when it is done.

Anders, have you thought about making another thread, or website to sell the kits you do make? This is the thread that pops up first and foremost when we search for Alternator upgrades and solutions. Thanks for all the hard work you've put into these things by the way, I'll be saving my pennies for a kit of my own. : )

I just posted a message here that my rotor is farked on the 77 cb550k that I thought was "almost done.." ha ha.

So yes, please put me down for one of your systems. In the meantime, I am gonna look for a solid used one to get by.

I am also finishing a 73cb500k for a friend and I would guess he'd be interested as well (price dependent).

Thanks.

I recently restored and sold a 77 cb750f, and am nearly finished with a (former basket case) cb750k5.  This is a place to share, learn and enjoy.  I am grateful to and for 99+% of this site's membership.
