'77 CB550F 4-1 exhaust/muffler

I just acquired this 77 550f and the exhaust is in fairy good condition. But like most it is rotted out on the tip of the muffler. I was wondering if there was a way to fix this? I'd really like to keep it original but finding a nice muffler in better shape then mine will probably cost me more than what I paid for the bike in whole.

Any recommendations on a slip-on? I'd like something that is fairly quite.

That exhaust for the most part looks good.  I had one with a similar issue and used high heat JB Weld.

Thanks for the "tip"

I'd like to find a quality slip on and try to restore the original muffler I have.

Anyone used a muffler from Dime City Cycles?

I don't think that you can really restore a muffler. The metal is so thin and brittle and the surface so contaminated with soot that welding is almost impossible.

You can rivet in patches, but anything you do is going to be temporary.

I'd have to disagree, a friend of mine fixes mufflers all the time. Obviously it depends how big the hole is etc... and its not going to last forever, but a few years is still worth it.  The trick is finding someone that will do it cheaply enough, my friends undercharge in a way that its always cheaper then buying a new muffler.

It is kinda hard to see in the picture but the muffler tip and right on the bottom near the tip is rotted out. I might be able to fix it or I'll give it a shot anyways. My profession is welding (pipeline welder). although not much of a fabricator and its been awhile since I picked up a tig torch.

I picked this bike up off of Craigslist in NY for a few hundred.

Thats a great patch job on that exhaust! I think the hardest part for me is going to be trying to form a patch for where mine is rotting out.
