Hondakey.com can't help with an ignition key I need. Can anyone suggest another option?

Secondly are Comstars sought after at all, or are they a dime a dozen?

I cut my own from a blank from Home Depot. It has to be shortened and takes some time with a file, but it is definitelly doable.

Just find the correct profile - the blank is a dollar or so - and using small files copy your old key into it.

Downside is I just picked up this bike (79 CB650) & there is no key. I do have a key # off the ign switch.

The guy in the service department has a couple large boxes of used keys. I just sorted through them and found half dozen I needed and paid like about a buck.

If you have the number and don't want to spring for a new switch it might be worth a call - can't hurt.

Yeah, nobody really likes / wants the Comstars - although like Stev-O says the Lesters are really pricey.

The reverse comstars are hard to get rid of. Although the 17 rear in 79 is one year only. And the front is narrower.

I get mine made from our local locksmith they actually carry them in stock. If he has to make it from the switch they charge 12.00 if you have a number they charge 7.00

Why not just get a different ignition switch???
The COMSTARS can be polished to make a decent looking set of wheels but in the long run they are still COMSTARS.
Get you a set of wheels from a CB550, cast alumnimum and star shaped. They can be made to fit a CB750.

Call a local locksmith and ask them if they can make a key for an old Honda. I paid $15 for two keys for my CX500.

Dont' need a switch. I picked up this bike for the engine only so the best of the rest is for sale. I'd like the key to open the tank and figured someone might like a good original Honda switch/key when I'm done.

I've got a locksmith I've used before, I can see him. Often though buying a key from these online key joints is faster.....if they have it.

I've never paid attention to these Comstar wheels so wasn't sure if anyone would want them. Into the scrap they go!

You can open the tank with any key, or a screwdriver. The hole is slotted for a key so you can use the key out of convenience, no tumblers in there.

There was a guy on here looking for comstar rotors- you might pull those and save them... Otherwise nobody really wants the comstars. I'm using a set on my F2, I think they look pretty good all cleaned up.

The cush rubbers would be worth saving too, if they're still good. Sprocket carrier will be the same as 77-78k, with the 10mm offset- Chopper guys like those for running wider rear tires.

maybe true on earlier bikes, but not on '80 and newer CB650s it is keyed like the ignition and helmet lock. What key number are you looking for? Someone hay have the number you need and be able to get it copied for you.

Hey BW,
Something a lot of people don't realize is the Comstars on the CBX are all aluminum. Spokes and all. Maybe Goldwing, too. At a glance they look the same but you can tell(at a distance) by the extra stamped in shape to add strength because the spokes are aluminum.

Take the ignition switch to any good locksmith and have it re keyed.

In the meantime CB650 PM an address & I'll see how detrimental shipping will be for the rear.

My buddy here has a pristine 78F model 750 (he is joining the forum soon) and we had a CBX here a few days ago and were comparing wheels. For me the CBX comstars are as good as they get. Would like to build a replica of a RCB1000 that looks like it has the CBX comstars on it.

Pretty sure in the states we only got 650's with reverse comstars. I might be wrong, though. I only like the silver ones. I have a pristine rear wheel from a 750F that I would consider selling If could get an aluminum set. What are the dimensions of the rear wheel?

This rear is a 2.5x17 but I don't think it's anything other than what came stock on a 79 CB650. They are all aluminum.

I know I'm late to the game but this guy does great work and is affordable. I think he got the replacement parts for his machines from Italy. Best to call and talk to him. He can work from the code on your ignition or the helmet locks and can rekey things. He has done several of the CX/GL forum guys bikes.
He rides and is a professional.

The guys name is Jim Hamilton, he is a locksmith and his prices are great. He charged me $4.00 + shipping for a key cut from the code. He is very friendly and a biker as well. If you need a key, give him a ring or shoot him an e-mail.
