Rear Brake Shaft Stuck/Hard to Rotate
« on: February 09, 2013, 08:53:44 AM »
Hey Guys,

So I'm installing new rear brake shoes and they are quite the stubborn ones. I got the shoes/springs off, but before I put the new ones back on, I'm concerned about this actuating shaft. Its extremely difficult to rotate, and I can't seem to find any documentation on its removal.

Does anyone know how to remove it/clean it?

Thanks!!

Should pull right out. Soak it.

Grease it up when installing.

Put the lever back on after soaking with penetrating oil and work it back and forth.  It should loosen up!   Some heat would help too!

Heat and rocking, maybe a good couple taps from a hammer with a rag so you don't mar the splines. Avoid using the hammer if you aren't going to be careful tho

You may have a hell of a time with the rear shoes when you go to put everything back together. IDK if you will but EBC's require some massaging to even fit and then you have an extremely tight brake. You will have to probably do some shaping to get them to fit nicely.

That shaft, and the front puck bores are why you never want to apply the brakes on a project that has been sitting until it is off your trailer and into the shop.  One little tug for curiosity and you have a 500 pound block of dead weight.  I have had to lift the rear and move the bike forward 8" at a time.  What a pain.

I did exactly that ^^^ with my 750.

Me and my friends ended up lifting the thing around to get it home

Mal I think the only thing that holds it in place is the lever (brake arm) after some PB blaster you can use a block of wood and drive it out.

Yup. Lifting and moving it 8" at a time is tiring as hell, hence the repair. Oh yeah. And I want to actually ride this thing.

Anyway, finally got it off. Heat, pb blaster, and a very persuasive hammer. Marred the grippy end a little, but its okay. Thanks guys, ya'll are the best.
