Topic: Titling vehicles. Why?

I mean seriously, it's the only-piece of non-land property that we have to have a piece of paper to prove ownership.  I don't need a title for my stereo or any of my other possessions.

Why does the government make me prove to them that I own some items but not others?

Some people say "Proof of ownership, someone can steal it and claim it's theirs."  But people can already do that with ANYTHING else I own, and stereos or guns are much easier to steal than a car or bike.  If you want proof of ownership, I argue that "title" papers or other proof can be kept in a safe deposit box or a safe in your home and there's no need to get the government involved.

Why involve the government in vehicle ownership?

How many great project bikes or even just great bikes are out there without titles and people pass them over for purchase because it's be a pain in the ass to own?  That's BS and everyone with a brain knows it.

I think the British system is much better, just have police inspect vehicle to make sure its not stolen, vehicle inspection to make sure it conforms to laws enforce when it was made (except for a very few retroactive items) and your good to go.  Govt gets even more tax money, they dont get anything if it isnt registered. The way things are in US even if a vehicle was legitimately sold many years ago, the family of original owner could still have a claim if they said it was stolen, dissapeared one day, etc. (particularly if they still have original title) I guess that as most bikes are not worth that much it isnt a problem-yet

Roads, infrastructure, and maintenance of such take money.  You don't need to title exclusively off road vehicles.

Fact is, you do not need a tittle to own any vehicle.  You might wish to have a bill of sale, to withstand challenges to ownership.  However, if you want to operate it on government roads, it must be legally registered.  And, you can't register it in your name without proof of ownership.  Then the government will grant you the priviledge of highway use, as long as you contribute to the maintenance of the roads, and the beauracracy to support them.
