Raymax's K2? Cafe (Eventually) Need new cases :'(

Well, I finally started teardown on my bike.


My friend found it for me, living in a barn in Illinois. The PO said it had been parked for 10 years, but it does kick over and the oil pressure light went out. I have a few ideas in my head for where I want to go with this bike, but they won't be concrete until the bike is done :o.

Anyways, I'm a man of few words, so I'll commence with the pictures. This is from a few weeks ago, it's actually a little further down than this but haven't really touched it since then :'(. Been busy with school lately, and also trying to get my KLR650 running again so I can sell it, can't seem to get the carb clean enough to run properly (Which is scary, because it's just ONE carb!).

Here she sits when my friend picked her up. It was actually brought down to TX towed behind a Prius of all vehicles.

The PO must have been Thor, because both clamps are cracked. Possible candidate for a Goldwing swap?

Right side cover is in good shape, but left side has a small crack








At the end of the day. Doesn't look like I got much done. I was moving a little slow, learning my way around the bike.

Nothing exciting yet. If I have time, I would like to get the engine out next weekend.

Yeah, got all caught up in posting pictures. My plan is definitely to go cafe with the bike. I'm having to think hard right now about how much I want to spend on it though, that will drive my plans.

My main inspiration definitely comes from these two bikes though:

Great looking inspiration.  You might want to try to get it running so you know what kind of shape the electrical and motor are in -- before you tear it all apart -- rather than not knowing the running condition of your components.

You can spend a little or a lot of money.  Be realistic about your budget (at least to yourself) because it will probably inflate when you seen all of the cool stuff available.  If you can fabricate or machine metal, you will be a huge step ahead.  If you can wrench and tune carburetors, you will also be a huge step ahead.

Well, finally got some time this weekend. Managed to get the engine out of the frame and started tearing it down. Look like I'm gonna need some new case halves though. Mine have a hole from the chain, and got some pretty bad corrosion on the rear. Head and jugs look pretty good though. Need to find a good machine shop to send the cylinders to, so they can be measured and bored if needed. May just send everything to cyclex, depending on cost.

Anyways, more pictures.

I was all set up to try the Jackstand method, when my dad said "Why don't we just lift it out?". So we did. Went pretty smoothly.

I use this ebay seller quite a bit - they've got lots of CB's parted out, and the best thing is that they take offers on everything - I just picked up a good set of coils for $20 and a set of barely used primary chains for $17. I noticed that they've got cases off both a '70 and a '76. Good luck with the build.

Sucks about the cases. You should note that if you know a skilled fabricator/machinist he can probably fix the cases. Otherwise, like said about: there are plenty of parts motors out there... just make sure they don't have the same problem as yours. ha

When you get to the top tree dont forget to replace the missing spacer washer that goes at the pinch point.

You inspired me to do some research. I was under the impression that it was a 1973 (and therefore a K3 right?). But it looks like it is in fact a K2. The Engine SN is: 2069887 and Frame is: 2062111(I think, the last few are hard to tell). From my quick look, I guess that make sit a K2.


@Abby and IW Thanks for the tips. I'm probably gonna order cases in the next week or so. Should get the engine torn down this weekend.

I have searched, and I think I found the answer, but it is possible to interchange Cases and Cyl/heads? For example, I could put my K2 head/cyl on those 76 cases?

I also have a 1973 K2.  Mine was manufactured in June 1972, but "strangely" was titled as a 1973.

In 73 they went to a wider output shaft bearing, So 73-76 maybe the way to go if you cant find 72 cases. Yours can be fixed. 77 and 78 motors have a longer sprocket shaft, good if you want wide tire, you have to shim rear sprocket or change carrier if you want to run those 2 years.
