New guy with a 1978 CB550
« on: February 11, 2013, 12:23:56 PM »
Hi all,

Bought a 1978 CB550 before the winter, and will be working on it as the weather gets warmer.
The bike was dropped by the previous owner on the left side, with below damages as far as I've been able to tell:
- Speedometer destroyed (posibly the bracket is bent as well?)
- Left fork ear & reflector (looking for OEM, but wondering about the aftermarket items)
- Left mirror mount cracked (damaged clutch lever perch)
- Shift lever bent
- Handlebar bent
- Left rider footpeg bent
- Rider footpeg rod (the loooong bolt that goes through the frame) bent where it holds the left footpeg
- Left side signals destroyed
- Real grabrail damaged, where it holds the left signal
- Seat has a tear

When I picked up the bike, nothing would turn on with the turn of the key.  I blindly changed the fuses and now the headlight turns on.  Haven't cranked it yet, so I'm not even sure if the engine turns over.  But will do that as soon as I clean out the carbs and replace the gas and motor oil.

Biggest headache now is finding info on the compatibility of the items.  As of now, I think everything is interchangeable between 1977 and 1978 CB550's.
Hope to have more to report as things get rolling.

Welcome to the forums.  This is a great place for information (as you probably already know).  I've got a 77 and 78 CB550K, been working on them a little bit.  If you got a question or want to compare notes hit me up.  It's always good to find another 78 CB550K owner.

Thanks for the replies, guys!
Still doing some reading and hunting down parts I need.  Look forward to comparing notes and contribute to this forum where I can.
