Emgo Products?
« on: February 12, 2013, 07:24:13 PM »
I'm new to the bike building world and I'm looking for some nice replacement parts for my 75 CB550 and Emgo has some nice looking stuff for really reasonable prices...like fork ears and clubmans that I'm looking at. I was just looking for some insight from some more experienced guys to see if they make quality products worth buying.

Are you referring to emgo pods? Many will tell you that they are craps....at least go with Uni pods or k&n.  Better yet, keep stock air box.

My bike came with pod filters on it, but I'm going back to stock airbox. Emgo makes all kinds of stuff. From exhaust setups to bars and lights. I was looking at a couple different headlight brackets that they have. Just seeing what the quality of there stuff was in general before I buy a bunch of crap and possibly get stuck with just that, crap!  ;D

you made a bunch of assumptions there.. are you posting in the right topic? OP never mentioned anything about pods... just other replacement bits like fork ears... and now it turns out he is trying to go back to the stock airbox on top of that...

Now in reply to the original question, I have seen a couple bad parts from emgo, but usually its just what you'd expect, a cheaper but functional part... so it can be worth a try. However when it comes to anything from timing points to clutch cables I would stick to Honda parts.

Thank you singedebile...I'm planing on doing a decent overhaul on the the bike and anything major would definitely be genuine parts. For instance, the brake caliper and master cylinder kits and carb kits will surely be genuine, but for smaller signals and some cosmetic parts to clean up the old bulky look of the 550 will all be aftermarket or re-pop parts.

I've bought some Emgo, they were ok for a very reasonable price.  If you want high quality, look elsewhere. I bought a clutch perch and lever, was cheap and looked it. Worked fine though.
Don't bother with master cylinder rebuilds either, repops from DSS are the way to go.
Not sure what bike you have, but if it's a 750 look here, can't beat this for $45.

I just got a set of EMGO fork ears in the mail today:

http://www.oldbikebarn.com/Custom-Black-Headlight-Brackets

I had to bend them a little to make them work on my CB750 K8 (the little tab on the smaller piece kept popping out of the slot) but I think they might hold up. They don't look that bad either. I'd say they are worth all of the $7 that I paid for them. I would have preferred to get the Joker Machine brackets but they are $203 more than the EMGOs. I'd say that EMGO is the Harbor Freight of motorcycle parts. They are all inexpensive, some work fine, some work great and others you throw away 10 minutes after you take them out of the box.

Ha! I just took off those Bike Barn fork ears off my K5, going in the trash!
I like the eBay ones, those look nice, get em.

DSS has a US location now, see link above.  And they carry both genuine Honda parts and aftermarket, it is always stated in the listing.

HELL YES! I've been looking at that damn UK website since friday when I first logged on to this forum.  Looking at all those damn conversions was getting really annoying hahaha. I found another set of the fork ears with shims for cheaper that look almost exactly the same...think I'll scoop those on payday. Oh wait thats today! :P

They probably are the same. Although they aren't shown in the link you posted, I think those EMGOs come with shims for the different size tubes they list. I have also noticed that most resellers don't mention the brand, especially if they are EMGOs. If you get them, let me know how they work out so I have a decent alternative when I throw mine away in a few weeks. Those were my second choice by the way but I really wanted some black ones and wanted to start with a set that I didn't have to paint. Like I said, I really like the black JM ears but couldn't pass up the 97% savings.

Can you post a link to the cheaper ones you found?

Perhaps I was making too many assumption here but the whole statement made by the OP pretty much fit in the cafe racer formula. So, what's wrong with reminding people that pods are not particularly good with our bikes, especially the emgo kind.

Bought a headlight trim ring (outer and the inner pieces) almost a year ago. To this day it still looks mighty fine, aside from what looks like a rock chip (unavoidable, obviously).

Their cheap headlight ears qork good huat get the right size. They come in a smaller size and then the size that works for our forks. The smaller ones will want to pop off easily. The blinkers are alright too

There are several motocycle breaker yards where you can get used parts too.

I have bought stuff from Clint over at www.motolane.com before. He always has a few SOHC4 bikes and his prices are reasonable.

www.cyclesalvage.net in Wisconsin is another option.

Just bought a tailight with licence plate bracket it's coming tomorrow and going back because they don't mention it's for a British bike and our liscence plates are too long for the bracket you have to drill holes in your liscence plate

@Banker Thanks for the salvage yard info...I'm sure I will be checking them out frequently. @neilc I was looking for the same thing and I noticed that they have a crap ton of parts that come up in the search, but after further investigation you see that they are Triumph parts....I ordered some fork ears last night so we will see how they fit up next week.

Remember DSS have a US site now as well. Shipping would have to be less from inside your own country. They've already got the bits to the States for you  ;)

+1 for the Hong Kong stuff. If you have a mind for planning a little ahead you can get some nice stuff at decent prices. A lot of what they sell is the same stuff(/ very similar) a lot of vendors buy and resell at marked up prices

For instance bar end mirrors. Unless you drop a little bit of cash most have cheap mounts you end up improvising. why not pay like 10 bucks less per each
