Comstar Speedo Question?
« on: July 13, 2006, 08:57:38 AM »
Hi Gang. As you know I have been working on a 1978 CB550K. I recently received a set of Comstar Mags that have already been machined to fit the CB550 (proper spacers for chain alignment).
My questions are:
A. Is the front axle from my spoked wheel the same size as the comstar?
B. Does the Comstar use a different speedometer set-up? I did not receive a speedo (or front axle) with these wheels and I'm not wanting to take everything apart during the riding season unless I'm pretty sure I have all the parts I need.
C. I bought a set of the Dunlop D404...my dilemma; Do I mount them to the OEM spoked wheels that I know fit, or try fitting the Comstars? Thanks, DrMark

Here is a picture sent by the PO. They are slightly darker grey on the spokes and the rim is plain aluminium. The front disc is already mounted...hoping this fits my calipers. The PO said they were mounted to a 1977 CB550, mine is a 1978. Which side does the speedometer drive mount to? Maybe you can tell from the pictures. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Just found out that a neighbor (a professional power-coater for 12 tears is setting up a shop in our area (i.e. at his house). Might get them power coated if the price is right...lol
BTW, How can you tell the differences in the comstars? Does anyone have information pertaining to these? Thanks, Dr Mark

Does anyone with experience with Comstar rims care to help me with a speedometer drive question? Will my original spoked wheel drive work with a Comstar? If not, see picture above to to see which model I have and where I can get one....Thanks. Dr. Mark

Not sure what I need to mount these....not finding alot of info on the internet about these.

Those look like the 77-78 comstars to me. Rear is a drum brake right?   I think that models that used comstars with drum brake are:

750A
400A
450? Hawk

There may be more involved in swapping your wheels. You may need forks, calipers/mounting brackets from the Comstar donor as well.   Sorry I do not know what wheels your 550 speedo drive is compatible with.
