Master cylinder upgrade options
« on: July 18, 2006, 11:04:39 AM »
Looks like my MC is too worn out to rebuild, so it's time to upgrade.  I'm hoping to nab something off eBay from a more modern bike.  What models should I be looking for to harvest from.  Anyone have any warnings about what NOT to use?  Any suggestions about models I should be looking for? I did a search and didn't seen any specific suggestions.

Thanks,
Zak

Do a search on the old posts; this subject has been deal with before. Basically you need to make sure that the bar diameter is the same, that the MC is designed for either one or two discs (because of the amount of flow), and if you want integrated or independent reservoir.

Sorry, I don't have an answer for you either but I was just about to ask the question myself.  Let me know what you find out and I'll do the same.

You need to talk to Andy Harrison (skidpan)

Met him at the Ace Cafe on Sunday and his beautiful cafe 400F has a modern (square) M/C

Look here:  http://www.bikepics.com/members/skidpanalley/75cb400/

PM him for info as I can't remember which model it was from.

Hey Zak,
I've replaced the Fugly original Master Cylinder (and the equally butt ugly right hand switch block - but that's another story) on my 400f with one from a Honda CBR250RR. It was all black, but I've stripped the paint and polished it up. It has the brake light switch underneath - as with most modern Master Cylinders, so I've been able to eliminate that weird switch block in the middle of the brake line, and  run a braided line all the way to the caliper from the MC. I tried to retain the hard line because I like the way the line would sweep back, but it was 'too hard' for most custom line builders so I ended up with a little banjo and a little banjo bolt that goes directly into the caliper. (that's another story and another post altogether).
But I digress...I've done a search on Master Cylinder in the tech forum, and there are a number of entries about replacement, someone even suggested a Buell one! You just need one that will pump a single disk caliper and mount on 7/8 bars. Ask the mechanic at your local wreckers, and get one that has had it's banjo bolt packed with grease so that the piston won't have rusted up / you won't need to do a rebuild.
Braking performance is definitely enhanced - there's a lot of 'talk' in this forum about lock up dangers and performance of single pot calipers vs two and four pot calipers - I don't know about any of that, it's just more modern in feel that's all.
Good luck with it all.
Hey how nice is Andy's front mudguards on that 400f? where did he get them?

Andy did all the work himself (except the paint) - but it's the tank that draws the crowds (initially) - isn't it gorgeous !!

Wow. That it is!  Fantastic job!  Love it!

Buell MCs seem to be a popular choice over on the hondachopper forum FWIW.

Thanks for the responses.  I did a search of the forum archives (again) and got better results this time.  I opted to order a brand new M/C as I am getting tired of these little setbacks which are taking away from my precious little riding time.  I ordered a Magura M/C from mikesxs.com.  Hopefully this will sort me out.

Thanks,
Zak
