Do those forks support the later short caliper hangers and the dual piston calipers common on the early 80s Honda bikes? While they aren't known for lack of braking, didn't know if the additional compounds available would be desirable for better performance.

What color are you planning for this new bike?

I like the orange '78 alot.

I'm sticking with stock forks and brakes. Was a matter of budget more than anything.

Main colour on tank and tail section will be a metallic charcoal (don't have exact name in front of me) with dual titanium rally stripes up the middle.

Finally got top end all sorted out - helicoiled the shaft-stop bolt hole, resealed pucks and got rest of it back in place. Valves lashed etc.

Then got a bit of work done on the frame. With some of the worst welding to grace the pages of this fine forum - got the base in for my tail section/electrical.

Also finished painting the tank and headlight bucket. Tank lid is just resting there and I won't clearcoat until after the seat/tail section is done and painted. Picked up some 2K clear so am hoping this bike stands up better to gas than my last one.

Changed out my fork seals and put everything back together. Noticed that the tubes were REALLY tight going back in. Poured fork oil in and installed spring and put cap on. Forks are WAY stiff - one of them moves a bit, but the other one won't budge. It's been about 12 hours now and I even left them upside down for a time thinking that maybe the oil needed to work its way into the seals a bit. Still nothing. Is this normal? I don't want to assemble the whole fork if there's something else needed. I might try warming them up a bit just to see if it helps.

They shouldn't be that tight, even with the fresh install, and if the seals are working correctly, oil won't work it's way in. I would remove the tubes. make sure that the seals are in squarely, then smear some fork oil on the inside before re-installing the tubes.

Thanks. I've got a bit of movement now, so I think the issue is that I used a bit of grease instead of the fork oil to lube the inside of the seal. The more I spin and compress the tube the more movement I get, so I'm hopeful that it will continue to get better. Other option is to put my wife on the bars when I take it for its first spin.

More work on tail section. Working with fiberglass sucks. Now I know why they don't make cars out of it anymore.

Ahhh, summer. Weather's been too nice to spend time in the garage. But sliced my hand open a bit, so had a chance to get back at it. Frame is painted, engine is in. Assembly begins.

Forks on. Currently working on clutch basket reassembly. Taking my time going through past forum postings and tales of what to do as well as what not to do. Just realized that I need to take all the plates off and make sure I've got all the steel ones goin the right way.

While I wait for some parts to arrive, I thought I'd have a go at seat upholstery. Sewing is stressful work, at least when you're trying to keep your lines straight. I'm happy with how it turned out.

Shocks should be here this coming week, and I'll be able to get the swing arm on and also start some electrical work. Still trying to decide on a battery. Will have to see how much room I can make in my seat hump.

Also painted my wheels.

Great job on the seat, what foam did you use?

Used multiple layers of yoga mat. Got one for $12 (69" long) and there's probably enough to do more than two seats worth. Topped off with layer of 1/2" foam just to smooth the corners.

Is there a thread in here for Stupidest Thing You Did Today? If not then maybe I'll start one. Spent yesterday evening mounting my tires. Holy that's some hard work, even with the copious amounts of soap that I used.

Anyways - much blood, sweat and knuckle skin later, I sat back and admired my rear wheel. And then I got that sinking feeling in my stomach, as it suddenly dawned on me that I hadn't checked the tire rotation. $&@! Which is kind of funny, as I change the tires on my mountain bikes at least 3 or 4 times during the riding season and I'm always careful.

So with a feeling of dread I had a look, and lo and behold I was on the right side of the 50/50 chance. Big sigh of relief.

So here they are, just waiting for their rotors etc.

Congrats on the progress and that the bike is coming together without "too much" expense (having skipped the GSXR or R6 front end can easily add $800-1200 to the build...).

Thanks man. Yeah, I hear ya. And not to mention the extra time it would have added. And while the look of the inverted fork is cool, the stock front end has grown on me, and suits my overall vision a bit better.

Haven't posted in here lately. Life is a bit busy but should be getting back to a more leisurely pace soon. Will be starting the electrical in earnest this weekend. Will have some of the final parts coming in next week, including bar, switches, headlight brackets. Still need to drill my rotors but have template drawn out. In the meantime, here are some photos of my more-or-less finished seat.

Also, my rotor drilling template
