Carb Status and Rebuild Opinions
« on: February 13, 2013, 05:34:14 PM »
Howdy,
I wanted to shoot a question to ya'll, i'm in the process of attempting to get my bike in a starting condition. With this I've arrived to the Carbs. After spending a while trying to get them off the bike (good ol' 2x4 helped) I just begun to open them up to take a peek. Right now they look like http://imgur.com/a/0plKr#0

I've noticed in other threads some people prefer to keep the old floats and needles in, while just using a dip in carb cleaner and the gaskets replaced. I wanted to know you're opinion, would it be better to
go with something like
(Part 2420)
http://www.newmotorcycleparts.com/fuel_system_parts/carb_kit_hon.html
or
http://www.ebay.com/itm/CB500-CB550-CB550F-Carburetor-Gasket-Set-16010-323-315-/380553651342?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item589ac3e48e

Thanks again!  :D

I wouldn't waste money on re-build kits.......just clean and re-use everything that is not disintegrated or obviously broken. Then just replace the individual parts that are.

Heat the rubber boots with a hair dryer and lube before assembly will make it much easier.

Noted - heres a stupid question, I assume that I should be removing all rubber components before putting the parts into the Carb Bath?

Do replace (use the Honda kits) all the orings if there is any sign of hardness of the old rubber.  Hard rubber won't seal.

If you insist on a carb bath, then most carb cleaners will damage the rubber bits.

Just pulled off some pieces to take a peek, looks like the rubber is all hardened.... I suppose the second ebay link should suffice? its $15 a set, anyone know of any place cheaper?

Like TT says, don't skimp on the gaskets. Use Honda ones. The 2nd link you posted looks like a decent price.. $60-75 is average for four kits. Your carbs don't look too bad either.. just take your time and make sure everything is spotless. Blow out all passages with compressed air to prove the circuits once you've cleaned 'em. Good luck!

Alright! i found them for $13 a set in the same guys store under another listing. I did notice some small wear on one of the brass pieces.. Looks like PO tried to pull it out with some needle nose pliers? It's on the brass piece that is supporting the black bar in the second picture. Can't be too bad right?

The outside of the main jet provides no metering regulation.  If the spring clip can still function and the oring can still make a seal to the carb body, "tooth" marks don't matter.
