New kid (ha!) on the block

Hi all
Well just a bit about me, my real name is Peter, artic fox is from when I was a heavy driver, I know your thinking it's arctic and I can't spell, well it's just a play on words (artic as in the wagons), I'll shortly be 59 yrs old, my first bike was a Yamaha RD 250, but I changed that to a CB250, this was in the day when a learner could ride 250's, I passed my test when I was serving in Northern Ireland back in the 70's, don't know if I was more scared of the test or getting caught.
Since then I have owned so many bikes there's not enough room on here to list them but my latest bike is a CB550 which should turn up today, it's in lovely condition but there is a little problem with it, it ticks over and revs fine but misfires and splutters when you try to ride it, I think it may be a vacuum problem or the fuel may be not getting through properly, but I'm open to other suggestions.
Among the other bikes I've owned, the most interesting I suppose was a Dnepr side car outfit which my youngest son and I rebuilt to look like a military bike in desert camo, unfortunately that had to go but that's another sad story for another time.
Well that's it for now.
Happy riding

Welcome to the forum  ;D.  Sounds like you are on the right track, another thing to check is the ignition advance mechanism.  It is behind the points plate on the right hand end of the crank as you sit on the bike.  It is easy to check,  you just hook up a strobe timing light at idle it should be showing at the "F" mark and at about 3500-4000 rpm it should be between the "ll" marks.  If it doesn't move then you need to pull the mechanism apart, clean it and lube it :D.
