Well, well, well, Godzilla has moved on to Birmingham. The old 550 ran great until about 3 miles from the destination at the Cheaha campgrounds. Started missing on the mains again. Funny, it happened at about 90 miles on a tankful last time as well. Met Kirk on his CBX, John on his CB750, and Cal on his Wing. Cal had the idea that the tank vent may be blocked and he was right. I was embarrassed to see the front tire down to 13 pounds (200 mile son the tire and tube)! Again, Wing rider to the rescue.
Transferred the monster but decided to head back and not take chances. On the way with the gang to a meal, the chain started knocking and I pulled into a school. Kirk noticed that the rear carrier had walked out toward the swing arm to the point where one carrier stud was hitting the swing arm - hence the noise.
I haven't had this hub out since I installed the last tire and that was over 10 years ago.
Assistance in pulling the rear and we could not budge the carrier so, down in Alabama. A Subway meal delivered to the lot, thanks Kirk!, and by 4:45, I was towing my baby back home. More to come when I pull this apart tomorrow, and the front sprocket cover...
Many thanks to a great bunch of guys with real knowledge of these machines. I feel great that I was able to do my part in getting that monster moving again.
