Topic: 1978 cb750f supersport

Looking at picking up a decent condition running 78 cb750f, is there anything that is common I should check for.  Are these bikes good I know they are the last of the sohc 750's  so just wanted to see what everybody thinks on here??

I REALLY like mine. I've had it for over 15 years and it's my favorite out of the 10 or so bikes I own. I lean it hard in the corners and it's never given me much trouble.

I cant think of anything off the top of my head to look for aside from the usual (running condition, electric condition, compression, etc). You'll get a BIG plus if you have side covers...they are the first thing to fly off / shatter on these bikes. Also, if the bike has power, turn it on and wiggle the connection beneath the turn key (where the pigtail goes in). The connections in the turn key get weak over time...if the lights blink of the bike shuts off you will need to get a new key switch.

I liked mine so I sold it to a friend.I keep tabs on it. It had a bad oil weep and has now 31k miles. Good bit faster than my 74 750k. The brakes are great. Cosmetics are harder to find. They are  prone to engine/oiling problems but if you are looking at a stock low owner bike you should be fine.  I have bought several bikes from the NH/VT area. Garage kept and lost in time. They are harder to find now. When I grew up the other station that came in was WMTW! Remember the weather mans teeth?

the bike has somewhere around 24000 miles look to be in pretty good shape i am thinking a stock resto on this bike, instead of a build, but havent decided depends on condition once i tear it down.  but $300 is pretty cheap he needs it gone stat, wife wants it gone this weekend so I talked him down to that, I will have 375 into it total.

$300 leaves a LOT of room for a restoration!  Jump on it...if you dont give me the guys information and i will :-P

The other thing i thought of that you might see is that oil will start to leak from the head/jug gasket. It's really not that big of a deal.

They are getting very hard to find for less than $1g.

Get it! But...keep in mind that it will need the head rebuilt soon(if it hasn't already been done). There's lot's of info on here about the later F model valve guides wearing prematurely at about that mileage. Definitely not a deal breaker at that price but expect to put some more money into it. Also, in my opinion, best SOHC you can get.

Well I pulled the trigger, bike is cosmetically rougher than I thought but it starts and runs!!!!! I will take pictures soon.

good luck with it.. i'm currently in the process of putting the motor back together on mine. with only 16k miles on it the exhaust valves were real loose in the guides. heres my thread on my build if its of any help to you
